"Good For Everyone" Herbal Tonic
By Bruce Baar, MS, ND

Edgar Cayce How to Develop Psychic AbilityIt was a day in late March of 1929, just at the beginning of spring, when the sleeping Edgar Cayce offered an herbal formula intended for both individual and more general use. Miss [5450], the reading recipient, was a young woman of 19 years whose skin was marred by a severe case of skin blemishes that she was understandably anxious to resolve.

The first reading in her series of three had taken place in Virginia Beach, Va. Here the underlying cause, reflected in the poor state of the young woman’s complexion, was identified as a number of spinal lesions, especially in the dorsal (thoracic) and lumbar areas. The effect of the resulting "pressures" on the elimination systems was a throwing of toxins into the circulation. The detrimental effects that resulted included toxemia, headaches, chronic low grade fever, a tendency toward both colitis and ulcers, and the appearance of pockets of infection, or boils, on the surface of the skin. Other symptoms included nausea, weakness, tingling of extremities, heavy feet, abdominal distress, and extreme sleepiness.

Cayce’s primary treatment recommendation had been a series of osteopathic adjustments supplemented by doses of Simmons Liver Regulator (a ragweed-based preparation, which is no longer available. Substitute this with Baar Ragweed Tincture) for intestinal cleansing, hot Epsom salts poultices over the lower spine and hips, Violet Ray applications to the eyes, a balanced diet, and Tim (now called Tibbex™) as a liniment for the boils.

Her initial reading was followed by two check readings, and it was noted that some of the treatments originally prescribed were not being followed.

Reading 5450-3 found general improvements but insufficient change in elimination patterns to clear the skin. Now Cayce advised eliminating all sugars from the diet and increasing savory foods. Spinal adjustments were to be continued, as were the colon cleanses and the use of a mineral-based laxative.

Also recommended was a new herbal formulation with the provocative comment, "and this would be good for everyone as a spring tonic…" This is an old-fashioned term for the custom of the annual springtime purge that helps the body release toxins accumulated during a long sluggish winter. This formula, different from the first, consisted of sarsaparilla root, wild cherry bark, dogfennel, yellow dock root, dogwood bark, and prickly ash bark, with balsam of tolu, oil of sassafras, and tincture of capsici. As Cayce observed, "This will assist in clarifying the whole system."

Reports do not indicate whether any of these recommendations were actually followed. Indeed, correspondence more than 35 years later suggests that they were not and that the health issues under discussion were not resolved: "So it seems to us that those lesions in [5450]’s spine were never fully corrected and that she needs the osteopathic treatments especially, with the other general cleansing treatments and tonics recommended in her own readings."

Fortunately for us, the New Seasons™, Herbal Tonic 545™ is now one that anyone can easily obtain. As an internal cleanser and energizer, it is ready to give the body a needed boost at any time of year. All ingredients work together for a specially calculated purpose, although it is also worthwhile to consider some of these herbs individually.

Traditionally regarded as a stimulant and blood purifier, sarsaparilla was valued by Cayce for its strengthening effect on the stomach and intestinal system:

"The Sarsaparilla Root is an emit, or a strengthener to the activities of the secretions in the stomach and intestinal tract." (Edgar Cayce reading #643-1)

"The Sarsaparilla works with the gastric juices of the stomach, and the eliminations in the peristaltic movement through the intestinal tract." (Edgar Cayce reading #1012-1)

The bark of various kinds of cherries, including the black or wild cherry, has been employed as a sedative, stomach soother, cough remedy, and tonic for general weakness. Cayce emphasizes its stimulating effect on the respiratory system:

"The Wild Cherry Bark is an expectorant and a purifier, as combined especially with the other ingredients for the blood supply." (643-1)

"The active principle from the Wild Cherry Bark with the other ingredients is a stimulation to the lungs, throat and bronchials and those organs above the diaphragm." (2790-1)

Yellow dock has deep roots used for various tonic purposes and for its effect on various internal organs:

"The Yellow Dock Root is an emit and blood purifier, an active principle with the secretions of the liver." (643-1)

"The Yellow Dock acts with the DIGESTIVE fluids themselves." (1012-1)

Prickly ash bark has been used in folk medicine as a diuretic, heart remedy, specific for liver complaints and all-around general stimulant. Cayce focuses especially on the liver:

"The Prickly Ash Bark is for the blood supply, as acted upon in the emunctory forces of the liver itself proper." (2790-1)

"The Prickly Ash Bark acts directly with the activative forces in the liver itself, in the gall duct, and as a stimulant to the pancreas and spleen’s activity." (1012-1)

These and the other ingredients work together to ensure that New Seasons™, Herbal Tonic 545™ is an excellent tonic for anyone’s needs at every season of the year!
