Which Element Is Your Pet?

Which Element Is Your Pet?
By Doug Knueven, DVM, CVA, CVC, CVCH

When Edgar Cayce spoke of the constitution of a person he was most commonly referring to the physical character of the person's body as to strength and health. Another way to think about the constitution of a human or animal is that it refers to the aggregate of the individual's physical and psychological characteristics. This is the meaning of the word when used within the realm of Traditional Chinese Veterinary Medicine (TCVM) which is based on Chinese medicine for people.

In TCVM, an animal's constitutional type reflects the pattern of inborn tendencies. It is the manifestation of the animal's genetic strengths and weaknesses. Knowing an animal's constitution can help you anticipate what types of diseases a pet is prone to, as well as behavior and personality traits. If you can see part of the constitutional pattern, you can predict the rest. Interestingly, over the years, holistic veterinarians have found that a pet's constitutional type often matches that of his owner.

The Five Elements or Constitutional Types

In TCVM there are five constitutional types-Fire, Earth, Metal, Water, and Wood. These five concepts are what the Chinese termed the Five Elements. The Chinese did not think of these as chemical elements as we might think. Rather they are processes that are reflected in all of nature. Every pet and person is a mixture of the five elements but usually one dominates their constitution.

As I talk about the constitutional types, I will mention a breed of dog that best exemplifies each element. It is the stereotypical dog of that breed that I'll talk about. I do not want to leave the impression that every dog of that breed is necessarily associated with that specific element. There is individuality even in the animal kingdom. And of course, cats and other pets can also be categorized into one of the elemental categories. So, let's look at the constitutional types and see where your pet fits.

poodleThe Fire constitution is represented by the typical Toy Poodle. The Fire pet is full of excitement and enthusiasm. When this constitution is balanced, the pet shows love and affection and is good at communicating with her owner. When this type becomes sad, lonely, and lacks interest, it is said to be deficient of Fire. On the other hand, excess Fire is manifested by over-excitement and manic or inappropriate behavior. The organ for this constitution is the heart and Fire pets are prone to cardiac disease.

The Earth constitution is typified by the Labrador Retriever. Earth animals tend to be gentle caregivers who hover, nurture, and protect. When this element is balanced the individual is sympathetic and supportive. If there is a lack of Earth energy then the animal tends toward excessive worry. Too much of the Earth tendency can cause the pet to be clingy and possessive. The digestive system is associated with the Earth element and these pets are prone to obesity, food intolerance, and diarrhea.

border collieThe Border Collie is the dog breed that best represents the Metal constitution. This constitutional type is focused on getting things done right. When in balance, metal animals have an easy rhythm of taking in and letting go. Those with a deficiency of Metal energy may have an inability to form lasting bonds and tend toward isolation. An excess of Metal leads to inflexibility and an extreme need for control. The Metal element is linked to the respiratory system and this constitution tends to have lung problems such as asthma or pneumonia.

The Water constitution is best demonstrated by the St. Bernard. They tend to be "thinkers, not doers." When the Water animal is in balance, they have a firm will and are not easily discouraged. Too little Water energy can result in an animal that is fearful and easily discouraged. Excessive Water can lead to stubbornness. Physical problems associated with the Water constitution include birth defects, kidney and bladder issues, and deafness.

Finally, the Wood constitution can be seen in the Jack Russell Terrier. These types are always active and doing something. When balanced, the Wood constitution conveys confidence and creativity. With a deficiency of Wood, a pet becomes uncertain, has low self-confidence, and is easily dominated. Too much Wood energy leads to aggressiveness, impatience, anger, and frustration. The Wood element is associated with the liver and this constitutional type is prone to liver disease as well as redness of the eyes and vomiting of bile.

Learning about these five constitutional types can help you better understand your pets and anticipate their needs. You might even learn a little about yourself in the process.

Your Planetary Soujourns—How Astrology Works

(Astrology, Edgar Cayce Readings) Permanent link

Your Planetary Soujourns—How Astrology Works
By Raye Mathis

According to the readings, between earthly incarnations, your soul lives, or sojourns, in the “environs” of the planets.

Several theories have been offered over the years for how astrology works. A causal theory proposes that there may be an actual physical influence from the planets (like the Moon-controlled tides) that is too small to be measured at the present time.

Another suggested theory is Carl Jung’s theory of synchronicity stating that things happening at the same given moment are in some way meaningfully connected.

“We are born at a given moment in a given place and like vintage years of wine we have the qualities of the year and of the season in which we are born. Astrology does not lay claim to anything else.” —C.G.Jung

Space Horizon

The Cayce readings brought forward a more universal and cosmic view of astrology with the idea of planetary sojourns. According to the readings, between earthly incarnations, your soul lives, or sojourns, in the “environs” of the planets, and the astrological influences you experience during this lifetime result from those between-life periods spent (not in physical form) in the environs of the planets.

"Hence we find astrological aspects and influence in the experience, but rather because of the entity's sojourn in the environ than because of a certain star, constellation or even zodiacal sign being in such and such a position at the time of birth." (1895-1)

In addition, an astrological reading does not give information about past earthly lives.

"Q. What is a horoscope reading?

"A. That in which the planets and their relative forces having to do with the planets that control the actions without respect of will or without respect of the earthly existences through which the body has passed.

"Q. Do horoscope readings include former appearances in the earth plane?
"A. Not at all."
 (254-21 Emphasis mine)

Astrology and AstronomyMany ancient medieval and esoteric philosophies and mystery religions have suggested that there is an astral plane that the soul must cross on its way to entering an earthly life, and then again, after death. Angels and spirits are thought to populate these celestial spheres.

In addition, Paramahansa Yogananda reported the following story in Autobiography of a Yogi (1972). Sri Yukteswar, Yogananda's teacher, passed from the earth on March 9, 1936. He then appeared to Yogananda on June 19, 1936 and told him that, "I am in truth resurrected- not on earth but on an astral planet...there you and your exalted loved ones shall someday come to be with me."

The Cayce readings suggest interesting differences between the influences of past earthly lives and the planetary sojourns.

Planetary Sojourns (between earthly lives) influence your mental development, contribute to your individuality, and are responsible for the influences seen in a horoscope.

Past Earthly Lives influence your emotional development, contribute to your personality, and can only be accessed through life readings, such as the type Edgar Cayce gave. They cannot be seen in a horoscope.

"(the planetary urges)... are but the mental urges that arise and become as the individuality of an entity in expression in the material world; while the appearances in the earth through the various sojourns ...are as but the personality in the entity's experience-and are as the urges from the emotions that have been created." (633-2) (my emphasis)

How do the Cayce readings define personality versus individuality?

"Personality is that ye wish others to think and see. Individuality is that your soul prays, your soul hopes for, desires. They need not necessarily be one, but their purpose must be one." (5246-1)

The readings suggest that if the personality and the individuality are not balanced and integrated, then the horoscope might not fit the person.

"Urges termed astrological would be very far from correct in this particular entity. For, as has been indicated, the personality and the individuality of the entity are quite at variance." (5246-1)

When working with planetary influences that result from your planetary sojourns, the readings always emphasize the need for setting an ideal and using your will to make life choices.

"Then, as to the influences from the astrological aspects or sojourns during the interims, know that these are merely urges. As to what one does with or about an urge is oft dependent upon what an entity holds as its ideal-and then the application of will as respecting same. (1842-1)

The Apple Diet in the Cayce Readings

An Apple a Day? How about Six?
The Apple Diet in the Cayce Readings

Josephine Adamson, MD, MPH, CMT

AppleMany people choose to fast for spiritual and/or health reasons. For some it offers a time of focus and reflection. For others it’s a kick-start for changing eating habits and losing weight.

For more than 20 individuals, the Cayce health readings recommended the “Apple Diet” as a three-day cleansing. The Apple Diet was a modified fast where one eats nothing but apples for three days and drinks only black coffee and water. One reading advocated eating at least five or six apples a day.

Apples of the “jenneting” variety were specified in the Apple Diet readings including Jonathan, Black Arkansas, Red and Golden Delicious, Oregon Red, Sheepnose, and Arkansas Russet. Webster's Revised Unabridged Dictionary traces the derivation of the word “jenneting’ to an old French festival of St. John’s Day on June 24. These apple varieties were the ones ripening early in the growing season. Though most of these American heirloom apple types are hard to find, Jonathan and Delicious varieties are available in many large grocery stores. Those apples we now label as chemical-free, “organic,” are preferred. Even back in Cayce’s day, there were concerns about artificially ripened and preserved fruit. Many of our supermarket apples come from orchards as far away as New Zealand! Apples grown as close to the consumer as possible are the best choices.

Baar olive oilAdditional instructions appeared in another reading: “Drink plenty of water, and follow the three-day diet with the big dose of Olive Oil." (1409-9) The doses recommended varied from 2-3 teaspoons (3673-1) to two tablespoons (780-12) to as much as one-half a teacup (6 oz) – which would be 6 tablespoons (1622-1).

For some individuals the readings suggested that the person repeat the Apple Diet once a month for 2-3 months. For others the readings suggested a quarterly Apple Diet. In all cases, the readings counseled that the Apple Diet would be effective: “This is to change the activity through the whole alimentary canal.” (3673-1)

Instead of choosing a commercially-produced modified fast, the Cayce readings offer us a natural and holistic Apple Diet.

Please consult with a qualified health care professional before starting any fast or new diet program.
