The Supernatural Crossroads:
The Threshold between the Seen and the Unseen

The crossroads, a place where two roads intersect, is the subject of many religious and old-fashioned folk belief systems worldwide. In my neighborhood, most crossroads are outside the borders of a town or intertwined in deep hollows in the countryside. These locations are often considered to be supernatural. As a child, I lived near a crossroads. There were two well-worn dirt roads that crossed each other, smack-dab in the woods. I was a country kid, and we lived in the boonies. When I disappeared, my mother would always go looking for me at the crossroads. There I was, sitting right in the middle of it. Even then, I must have realized there was power there, a thinning place of the veil between worlds. I believe there is a crossroads for every realm of the supernatural.


The crossroads legend became popular with the story of the renowned, American blues singer Robert Leroy Johnson and another musical colleague, Tommy Johnson. Both say they met a mysterious helper at the crossroads… According to the legend, as a young man living on a plantation in rural Mississippi, Robert Johnson wanted to become a great blues musician. He was instructed to take his guitar to a crossroads at midnight. There he was met by a mysterious black man who took the guitar and tuned it up to perfection. The crossroads spirit played a few songs and then returned the guitar to Johnson, giving him mastery over the instrument. Robert Johnson was able to create great blues music and become famous for it. I have always loved that story. As a matter of fact, Robert Johnson’s music in the background is helping me to write this chapter; that is inspiration at its best!

With further research and study, I have learned that the idea of a crossroads as a supernatural entryway is not uncommon. The crossroads is a place that is not claimed by the living or the dead; it’s an in-between place where our physical world and the supernatural world merge. While investigating house hauntings, I have experienced several instances in which the origin of the supernatural happenings happened at the crossroads near those houses.


In this work, I’m going to describe my experiences, insight, and thoughts about the supernatural. I am on a symbolic journey and standing at the crossroads to record a very elusive reality that at one point or another will cross the threshold into our everyday existence. At that time, we will be forever changed in the way that we see life, death, and destiny. With each chapter, you will enter a different crossroads into other realms, deepening your understanding of what resides behind the inspirited curtain that separates us from the others…Whenever I pass a crossroads, I always feel comforted by the fact that no matter how concrete, plastic, or fake this world gets, there are still some actual supernatural wonders and magic somewhere in this great country of ours. No one can duplicate or fake the real supernatural. The answers are at the crossroads, and we are all headed there to see what wonders await. …

As you walk into a thicketed forest, you can smell the evergreen foliage with its sweet, woodsy fragrance. You might feel the wind blow past as it takes a journey through the trees to parts unknown. The stillness of nature calls you to travel deeper and deeper into its realm. You realize at this time that you are hypnotized by the earth’s intelligence and wisdom and that the wind is actually guiding you to the core of nature’s beating heart. That core is like a distant drum, forever vibrating the song of God’s creation. I am amazingly in love and completely devoted to the power of the Nature Realm in all her glory. I say “her” because we are going to delve into the kingdom of Gaia, which is Mother Earth. …


… If you work with nature, nature will work with you. I’m often asked if humans can travel to the Nature Realm. As you have read, there are times when the veil thins, and we can take a peek into the faery world, but those are rare occurrences. If you are not fully in accord with the laws and support of Gaia, Mother Earth will not let you anywhere near her realm or her children. Our fur people, the animals and our pets, also have devas to guard them. Dogs, cats, and even creepy crawly creatures all are governed by their own specific devas. It’s truly amazing how congruent and well-ordered the supernatural realms are. All of God’s creations and mysteries are enveloped in his grace.

September 29, 1940



On November 15, 1938, Edgar Cayce sent a letter to all of the members of the Association for Research and Enlightenment. Here is a copy of that letter from 1469-1 Reports.

On the evening of November 4th I had this dream, vision or experience: I was in our office “reading room” discussing with some of the family the necessity for protecting and preserving the records we already have, and the means for doing this. Suddenly a master (the Master, to me) appeared and said:


Peace be unto you! Ask all whom you have tried to help to help you save these records, for they are their experiences and are a part of them! Whether they contribute a shingle, a beam, a window, a door, or the entire vault for the records, give them all the opportunity to have a part in the work.”


A place for preserving these records is becoming more and more necessary. We have…copies of individual readings, which we believe will, if preserved, be of inestimable value to the world through scientific research in the years to come. Investigators have told us that we have the largest collection in existence of the records of an individual psychic.


Such a place may be prepared at a cost of eighteen hundred dollars or more ($1,800), provided it is built adjoining my home here in Virginia Beach.

It was this letter that Edgar Cayce mentioned in his Closing Remarks for the Dedication Ceremony of the Library, Offices, and Vault on September 29, 1940:

There is only one thing I want to say. That is, “Thank you.” As you know, two years ago I had a dream which gave me the first concrete idea as to a manner in which this building might come into actual existence. As I thought of it, it seemed far away. The Readings have indicated for years that when a sufficient number of individuals had been convinced personally as to the value of the information, they would help pass it on to others. When I had this dream, I sent a copy to every member of the Association. Today we are able to see the result of this letter. The money, time and energy which have made this possible have come from those whom I have tried to help.


One of the carpenters, working on the building, said to me the other day, “Well, Mr. Cayce, I’ve heard about you... I’ve heard a lot of people say a lot of things about you, but I don't think I’ve ever met a man just like you. I don’t know what it is, that is different, but there’s something!” He possibly has never seen even a copy of a Reading; he doesn't know what it is all about. Yet, when we started putting in our library, the first set of books was given by this man. It is helpful to know that our efforts stimulate such attitudes in individuals.


We are dedicating this building for a service to humanity. “Inasmuch as ye do it unto the least of these, my brethren, ye do it unto me.” The service to our fellow man is the greatest service we can do for our Maker. For, it is seeing in our fellow man something we could worship in our Maker that leads us on, to hope for, to be the very best possible channel for good. The work of studying our records and preparing them for distribution is just beginning. We need your cooperation and the assistance of every member of the Association. We are ready to go forward.


Thank you! Thank you for helping me to make this possible.


Let us close with a word of prayer:
Gracious God, we thank Thee for Thy blessing to us. We thank Thee for the gift of Thy love, and the manifestations of Thyself in the earth through Thy Son, Jesus Christ. As we have come here this afternoon to dedicate this building for the purpose that we may better serve our fellow men, may we each dedicate...rededicate...our lives to Thee. For it is in Thee that we live and move and have our being. Be Thou, O God, the guide. Direct us in the things we do and say, and help us to choose Thy ways. Now, may the blessings of the father, the Son and the Holy Spirit be on each and every one, as we ask it in Jesus' name. Amen.

Edgar Cayce How to Develop Psychic AbilityI first read about Edgar Cayce when I was sixteen years old. My father, a naval officer, had been transferred to Virginia Beach, Virginia—home to the headquarters of the Edgar Cayce Foundation and the Association for Research and Enlightenment, founded by Edgar Cayce in 1931. The book was The Sleeping Prophet by Jess Stearn, a journalist and author of more than thirty books, nine of which were bestsellers. But it wasn’t until I got into college that I really began to study Cayce’s work. The professor of my writing class assigned us to write about a mystery, and since my mother had told me the mysterious story of Bridey Murphy, I thought that would be a good place to begin my research for this paper.


Bridey Murphy was the alleged name of a woman’s past life in the 1800s as an Irishwoman who died and reincarnated in the United States 59 years later. The book was The Search for Bridey Murphy by Morey Bernstein (published in 1952; it became a movie in 1956, starring Academy- Award winning actress Teresa Wright). It was the fascinating story of housewife Virginia Tighe (called Ruth Simmons in the book and movie), who, while under hypnosis, recalled (or virtually relived) her apparent past life as Bridey Murphy. Tighe’s hypnotic story (recorded on cassette tape) began in 1806, when Bridey was eight years old and living in or near Cork, Ireland. She was the daughter of Duncan Murphy, a barrister, and his wife Kathleen. At the age of 17, she married barrister Sean Brian McCarthy and moved to Belfast. Tighe told of a harsh fall season that caused Bridey’s death and of watching her own funeral. She described her tombstone and the state of being alive after her death—or more precisely, after her body’s death—in 1864. She said that she did not feel pain or sadness. Then, somehow, she was reborn in the Midwest of the U.S. in 1923. In this life, she had never been to Ireland and did not speak with even the slightest hint of an Irish accent—except when she was under hypnosis and “reliving” the Bridey incarnation! Then she spoke with an Irish brogue. In Bernstein’s book, he referred to Edgar Cayce and his remarkable abilities, explaining that he had investigated Cayce and could find no deception or trickery in his process. He thought that, as impossible as it may seem, the volumes of detail coming through Cayce on past lives couldn’t be anything but valid. Reading this, I decided to write my paper on the mystery of Edgar Cayce. Because it contained so many examples of Cayce’s readings on past lives and the karma that affected people’s present lives, I chose to use the best-selling book Many Mansions by Gina Cerminara. I got an “A” on my paper. But more than that, I developed an appetite for the Edgar Cayce information on past lives and karma.


Door to higher relms


Over the years, I read most every book about Edgar Cayce that there was. And though the initial “hook” that got me into the Cayce volumes was reincarnation and karma, it was the mystical, magical spirituality that filled his discourses that ultimately became my soul’s meat and potatoes. My soul and mind were being nourished by his spirituality. I could not get enough of his wisdom and stories, even though it was thick with King James biblical language and Christian terminology and concepts—things I had long ago deemed inadequate and often prejudiced, even racist and sexist, with a terrible history of violence. But Cayce’s perspective on Christian concepts was so open and so expansive, so beyond church dogma, doctrine, and historical acts, that I couldn’t get enough of it. His teachings included Buddhism and Hinduism. In fact, he taught that any faith that teaches the brotherhood and sisterhood of all humanity and the oneness of God was carrying the true message. In my twenties, this was exactly how I felt. His views found a receptive, responsive place within me. And the organization that built up around his work was open to all people from varying backgrounds and beliefs. They were “normal” people, not cultists, not living on the fringes of life, but quite a spread from our society. Now, after more than forty years of working with the Cayce material and concepts, and practicing them in my daily life, I have gathered together some of the key elements of his spirituality in this book. I’ve also added the wonders discovered by science—wonders of the outer life and outer reality, as well as wonders of the inner, unseen life and realms. And in writing this book, the material has reignited that flame of excitement that I had in my early twenties when I first encountered these ideas and their vast expansive vision into the purpose and meaning of life—of soul life. I truly would never have gotten to the awareness, vibration, and peace that I enjoy today, not to mention the quality of people I share my life with, without having studied and lived this material. I hope you find the light and inspiration that I found.

During Edgar Cayce’s long walks in the winter of 1927, he would pause at a remote stretch of windswept beach at Sixty-seventh Street and Atlantic Boulevard. Looking inland, he would stare up at a grassy knoll above the pines, the highest sand dune between Cape Henry and the city limits, and in his mind’s eye he would paint a picture of the hospital that he had come to Virginia Beach to build. He envisioned the building rising like a “lighthouse” over the sand and sea, becoming an enduring example of the motto soon to be etched into its cornerstone: “That we may make manifest the love of God and Man.”

The Cayce Hospital for Research and Enlightenment welcomed its first patient in 1929. The four-story building was designed along the classical lines of an antebellum plantation house, with a wide porch at the front running the length of the second floor and around the sides. The ground floor housed therapy and examination rooms. Porch early hospitalThe entrance was on the second floor, with stairs leading up to it from the outside. Inside the front door was the lobby, opening into a dining room, doctors’ offices, lecture hall, and treatment rooms. The third and fourth floors housed beds for thirty patients. In keeping with Cayce’s holistic approach to living a balanced life, there were tennis courts, a croquet and shuffleboard park, a club room for card players, meditation garden, and beach cabanas where patients could experience the healing effects of the sea, sand, and sun.


A victim of the Great Depression, the hospital closed its doors in 1931. The realtor handling the property believed the building to be cursed because of the frequency with which it subsequently changed hands: over the next two decades the hospital became a hotel, a nightclub, a home for army nurses, a Masonic lodge, and a venue for summer theater. Mindful of Cayce’s dream of creating a permanent physical presence in Virginia Beach, the fledgling Association for Research and Enlightenment, the A.R.E., purchased the property back in 1955. “Like troops retaking ground lost in an earlier skirmish, its spiritual soldiers enjoyed a sense of triumph,” was how one grateful supporter described the return home.

With the same bold leadership with which the hospital property had been reclaimed, the A.R.E. began a building campaign in 1973 which resulted in a million-dollar visitor center. The new building would come to house the most extensive collection of metaphysical books and manuscripts in the world, and conference rooms would host tens of thousands visitors each year to hear lectures on such subjects as ESP, dreams, holistic health, meditation, energy healing, and life after death.


On June 27th, the A.R.E. once again celebrates the Cayce legacy. Following the 2012 completion of the Don and Nancy de Laski Education Center, and the extensive 2014 renovation of the adjacent Cayce Hospital building, the A.R.E.’s world-class signature programs—Atlantic University, the Cayce/Reilly School of Massage, the Health Center and Spa, and the Edgar Cayce Foundation vault and study room—have new state-of-the-art facilities. And for the first time since Cayce walked what has become the A.R.E. world headquarters, students and visitors can enjoy one another’s company at the Cayce/Miller Café and Copeland Dining Room. The new building complex doesn’t just reclaim old ground; it stands as Edgar Cayce first envisioned it: a welcoming “lighthouse” for fellow travelers on the spiritual journey.

Humor for the Body and Soul

Laugh 01We have all heard the saying, “Laughter is the best medicine.” Some of us know that a sense of humor is essential for physical, mental, and emotional health. It can also, due to the positive attitude that accompanies it, improve our outlook on life and, in turn, encourage us to pursue those avenues that will make for spiritual development.

In the Cayce readings we find many references to the benefits of humor:

Cultivate the ability to see the ridiculous and retain the ability to laugh. For know only in those God hath favored is there the ability to laugh, even when clouds of doubt arise, or when every form of disturbance arises. For remember the Master smiled, and laughed oft, even on the way to Gethsemane. (Edgar Cayce Reading 277-1)


Keep an attitude of helpfulness, cheerfulness, hopefulness. Be optimistic! At least make three people each day laugh heartily by something the body says! It will not only help the body; it will help others. (Edgar Cayce Reading 798-1)


One that should cultivate more the humorous side of life; Not that which is at the expense of another; that is, never laugh at anyone but laugh with others often. (Edgar Cayce Reading 2327-1)


That the entity has a sense of humor has oft been a saving grace, in not only this experience but in others....Keep thy humor, keep the thinking well of self, but as well of thy neighbor. (Edgar Cayce Reading  2788-1)


At times the entity sees so well the humor in so many situations as to appear to see the ridiculous rather than that which is the creative force in humor. Do not lose this sense of humor. It will oft be a means for saving an unseemly situation. (Edgar Cayce Reading 2421-2)

Cayce’s readings addressed the ways in which humor aids spiritual development:

If ye lose the ability to laugh, ye lose that ability to be joyous. And the religion, the principle of the Christ – life is joyous! For remember He laughed . . . even at those that tormented Him. This is what angered them most. (3003-1)


The entity should attempt seriously, prayerfully, spiritually to see even that as might be called the ridiculous side of every question, the humor in same. Remember that a good laugh, an arousing even to what might in some be called hilariousness, is good for the body physically, mentally, and gives the opportunity for greater mental and spiritual awakening. (2647-1)

Laugh 02Obviously there is much agreement that an active sense of humor is beneficial to body and soul. We all know how good we feel after having a bout of laughter. In his conscious state, some have said, Edgar Cayce had a wonderful sense of humor. Apparently, that carried through to his readings, as is evidenced in the following witticisms:


Q. Any further advice on the body in general?
A. You better take a rest if you don’t want a long rest. (3436-3)


Q. Should I keep going to the same doctors?
A. If you want to die! (5051-1)


Q. Would it be better for the body to remain in bed without moving about?
A. It’ll move when you give it the castor oil, and that will be soon enough. (348-18)


Q. Which shoulder should be taped?
A. The one that’s hurt! (1710-5)


Q. If this treatment is followed properly, what period of time will be necessary to bring this body to its normal state?
A. One year, one month, one day, one hour, and 10 minutes from now. (4681-1)


Q. Is there any special name for the condition of the head?
A. Headache. (171-1)


Q. Give some specific lower limb exercise for the evening.
A. Those of the stooping, with the feet together, and those of the stooping with the feet, as the body raises, jumps up, and spreads feet apart – these are the best – be well to pull down the window shades though. (288-28)


Q. Have I ever contacted my husband in any other experience; if so, what way?
A. He bought you! Doesn’t he act like it at times? (1222-1)


The name then…was Lila. Before that it was known as Lulu, and was a lulu, too! According to the proverbial activity indicated from the name. (4046-1)


Q. Is the prediction true that I will die suddenly, at the age of 80, in Tibet?
A. If you go to Tibet and live to be 80, you may die there! This depends upon many, many, many circumstances. You will not die in Tibet, unless you go there; and there’s not the prospect now of going there! (2067-3)


…Hide not skeletons in thine own closet, for they will rattle when ye least expect them. (3246-1)


Q. What causes the bad disposition?
A. If the body had a more agreeable husband its disposition would be better! (2654-2)


Q. Will the body find himself in a lawsuit?
A. The body may find himself in any way. Best to find himself from within rather than in a law-suit. (213-1)


This last quote is certainly not a joke, but often an unexpected answer provokes laughter:


Q. Who will aid me most in my work and daily life?
A. God! (2444-1)


Laugh 03Don’t you feel better now that you’ve had a few laughs? Have a good laugh every day and give someone else one. You will de-stress and improve your health and disposition. Also, you will be more positive and more open to making the world a better place, rather than grumbling about it.

Before this…we find the entity was in the land of its present nativity, in what is now known as…Florida; during those periods when there were those settlings…from the lands of On (?) or the Inca….and those that gathered upon what is now the east portion of Alabama and Florida…

How and when these South American Indians arrived in Florida is a story which began about the time of the first upheavals in Atlantis.


…the entity was in the Peruvian land. For, with the first upheavals in Atlantis, the entity was among those who journeyed…to what later became the Inca land. (Edgar Cayce Reading 3042-1)


…the entity was in the Inca or Peruvian land, when there had been the first of the upheavals in the Atlantean land…

At some time after these Atlantean refugees had established themselves in the land, the Ohums conquered them.


In the one before this we find in that land now known as the Peruvian, or Ecuador. The entity then was among the Ohums…of that period, and among the peoples who journeyed in and conquered the peoples from the Atlantean upheaval, or the first of the series of upheavals that occurred.

The Ohum occupation of the Peruvian lands began prior to the coming of the Incals and the Poseidians. It continued until after the sinking of southern Atlantis.

The land referred to as the Peruvian land was much broader than the modern country of Peru. According to the readings, the Peruvian land included a part of the Atlantean land, a part of On (Og?), and Ecuador. Sometimes the Peruvian land was equated with the Incal land, which was also identified as Oz and Og.


…the entity was within that same Peruvian land, though not exactly in the same territory; rather in that from a part of the Atlantean, as well as a part of what became later the On [?Og?] or the Incal land…

From the readings we learn that these people included good engineers, and that they were great explorers and adventurers who traveled to the Yucatan, Central America, Argentina, and the American Southwest. Current archaeological data suggest that the earliest evidence of agriculture and the earliest known precincts with mounds and plazas in the Western Hemisphere occur in Peru. i

Out of this culture did Ms. 1298 travel to Florida, though at a much later date. This South American connection has been demonstrated linguistically.


In 1984 Julian Granberry published the first edition of A Grammar and Dictionary of the Timucua Language.ii In it he demonstrated that the Timucua, a group of Indians who resided in northern Florida and southern Georgia, were South American émigrés from the area of modern Colombia and Venezuela. The language family to which Timucua belongs encompasses an area extending down the Andes into Argentina, up the Isthmus of Panama into Central America, and deep into the Amazon jungles.iii Based on the measures available to him, Granberry estimated these South American immigrants arrived by at least 4,000 years ago. The trade network established by these seafaring adventurers was centered in what is now Colombia. The main trade item was pottery. In fact, the earliest pottery in North America appears on the Georgia and Florida coast, the direct result of this trade network. The Timucua were not the first South American traders to make the journey.iv


The more than four dozen readings pertaining to the Peruvian land make several assertions, including Incal influence in the American Southwest, that have yet to be demonstrated by the sciences. But, given the veracity of the ‘Incal’ influence in Florida, we can expect many interesting discoveries in the decades to come.

At this point, I felt I had a good concept of the nature of animals, but I hadn’t yet fully explored what the readings had to say about life after death for our animal friends.


As it turns out, I found Cayce’s answer in a group of readings given to several family members from February to September, 1933. Belonging to the family’s aunt and uncle was a little dog named Mona. Mona must have had quite a personality, because she was asked about in four of the readings given to this family over that eight-month period.


The first reading in which she is mentioned is for the 44-year-old aunt. The woman asked where and how she had been formerly associated with her husband, her brother, her niece, and then … there it was, “My little dog, Mona?”


To which Cayce responded that she was associated with Mona during a Roman experience. This Protestant woman, in 1933, for reasons perhaps known only to her, and for which I am very grateful, went on to ask, “Was she a dog then?” Cayce’s reply was emphatic, “A lion!” (Edgar Cayce Reading 268-3)

It didn’t stop there. This reading was followed a week later by a reading for the woman’s husband. In his reading, these questions were asked and answered:


“(Q) What relation is he to the little dog Mona?
(A) He fought with the body in the Roman experience.”

“(Q) What was Mona then?
(A) The lioness that fought with the entity, and with those that destroyed many that the entity was then seeking to aid.” (Edgar Cayce Reading 280-1)


Can you imagine this lioness trying to find expression in their home as a small domestic dog? This Mona must have been one tough little dog! Perhaps as tough as my Izzy!

Next we have a reading for the woman’s 11-year-old niece. This reading was given seven months after Mona is first mentioned in the readings, and the question was asked:


“(Q) Will Mona always be a dog?”
Cayce’s reply was:
“That depends upon the environ and the surroundings. No.” (Edgar Cayce Reading 405-1)


In other words, as tough as that lioness may have been during this family’s Roman experience, if she wanted to be a companion to this family again, coming back as a lion obviously was not an option. Due to the family’s current times and living environment, she instead became Mona, a spirited little dog.


The last reading that mentions Mona is perhaps the most interesting one. It was given for the woman’s 14-year-old nephew. In his reading, the question is asked,


(Q) Could a Life Reading be obtained through these sources for Aunt [268]'s little dog Mona?
Cayce replies, “(A) May be. As to WHAT it may be is different! It may not be understood, unless you learn dog language!” (406-1)


This is a great example of Cayce’s humor in the readings, but I also think he was quite serious about that answer! And I found a collaborative reading that elaborates on this concept with this analogy:


Venture Inward According to these readings, the lives of animals do continue after death. They also reincarnate, and it appears that, like us, they may stay with certain soul groups. Just as I can imagine human souls hovering over parents, deciding upon their “re-entry,” looking for that opportunity to once again bring spirit into the earth, I now have an image of our animals doing the same thing.

I was born the youngest of seven children. This was in the 1960s when large families were not uncommon. Though we struggled financially, we always had pets. More specifically, we had a family dog, and I had mice, turtles, and a bird (cats, rabbits, gerbils, and guinea pigs would come later). My mom knew I had a passion for animals, and in spite of my family’s financial situation, she always supported my love for animals by allowing me to have pets and taking me to the zoo as often as we could manage.

Shortly before my ninth birthday, my dad died. It was sudden and unexpected, and it put our family on a completely different path. Wherever we were headed before, we weren’t heading that way anymore. I was young, but I understood what had happened. I knew my father was dead. I had a concept of heaven from church—I attended Sunday school each week and went to vacation Bible school during the summer. I felt confident that my dad was in heaven.


But what I wanted to know was, do animals go to heaven too? During that time period in my family’s life, while staying over my aunt and uncle’s house, my young brain was trying to sort out what I believed and what I still questioned, so I asked my aunt, “Do animals go to heaven?” Her reply was, “No, they don’t.” I adored my aunt. I admired her, and I respected her. But her response broke my heart and called into question my young faith. I told her how I felt about it. “If animals don’t go to heaven,” I said, “then I don’t want to go there either.”


There is a RiverFlash forward several years, and as a teen I started reading books of a metaphysical nature, like Richard Bach’s Illusions. My mom and I had the same taste in spiritual material, but though she was aware of Edgar Cayce, I didn’t find out about him until my mid-20s when, under synchronistic circumstances, I ended up working at A.R.E. in the Membership Department. It was 1988 when I first read There Is a River, and that’s when my spiritual studies really began to take off.


At the same time, I had become a volunteer at the local zoo that my family had visited for all those years of my childhood. My love for animals would always be a part of my nature, and no matter what I read or studied, in the back of my mind were my aunt’s words and my desire to prove them wrong, because I wanted heaven, but I wanted the animals too.


Back in the 1980s, the Cayce readings were not yet in electronic form. If you wanted to research the readings, you had to either read books and other materials by authors who had done the research and published their works, or you had to physically go to A.R.E.’s library and look them up directly. There were no published works on Edgar Cayce and animals that I could find. It was only natural that I began to research what the Cayce readings had to say about animals. I wanted to know everything. What was their nature? Did they have souls? And, of course, did they live on beyond death? My research started at the beginning with this reading:


“Spirit pushed into matter—and became what we see in our three-dimensional world as the kingdoms of the earth; the mineral, the vegetable, the animal—a three-dimensional world.” (Edgar Cayce Reading 262-114)


This reminded me of the creation verses in Genesis but with an added depth. Seeing the animals as a spiritual kingdom and an expression of spirit as it had “pushed into matter” was an interesting concept for me. I wanted to understand this better, and I also needed to know what was meant by kingdom, so my research continued. I found more with this reading:


“In the material world, where we find expressions of the physical and of the spiritual, we find Mind. Yet what is known as the Group Mind—or that of the plant kingdom, the mineral kingdom and the animal kingdom...returns (as its Destiny) to the Creative Force which is its author, its maker. MAN—the free will agent...makes his Destiny as to whether his Mind...is one with or in opposition to the Creative Forces.” (Edgar Cayce Reading 262-80)


This concept of a Group Mind sounded to me like what we call animal instinct. I did not feel that this meant animals could not also be individuals, but rather I was reminded that animals are full of innocence. As this reading seems to indicate, that’s because animals are always in accord with the Creative Forces. Whereas humans—with free will—can act in “destructive” ways that are against the Creative Forces, this reading seemed to be saying that animals cannot.

Animals are living in accord with natural law, or the Creative Forces; that is, unless they are under the influence of a human’s free will. And yes, a human can teach a dog not to pee in the house, and yes, a human can teach an elephant to perform in a circus, but these are unnatural behaviors brought on by the force of a human’s free will (for better or for worse) and not in accord with the animals’ Group Mind (i.e., instinct or natural nature).


Because of humans’ free will, which can be used constructively or destructively, animals are dependent upon us for their wellbeing. Venture InwardAs was stated in the book of Genesis, we have dominion over animals and the earth. But since we have free will, it is our choice of how we wield it—for ill or for good, in discord or in accord with the Creative Forces.

the Soul’s Journey to the Sky

Ohio mound buildersEdgar Cayce gave 68 readings that in some way related to ancient America’s history. Of those 68 readings, a total of 14 directly discussed the mound-building culture that was active in America from roughly 3000 BC to historic times. Among Cayce’s statements about the mound builders was that the culture actually moved from the south to the north. He also related that the first true mounds were built in the south around 3000 BC.


With the injection of those of greater power in their activity in the land, during that period as would be called 3,000 years before the Prince of Peace came, those peoples that were of the Lost Tribes, a portion came into the land; infusing their activities upon the peoples from Mu in the southernmost portion of that called America or United States, and then moved on to the activities in Mexico, Yucatan, centralizing that now about the spots where the central of Mexico now stands, or Mexico City. Hence there arose through the age a different civilization, a mixture again.


Those in Yucatan, those in the adjoining lands as begun by Iltar, gradually lost in their activities; and came to be that people termed, in other portions of America, the Mound Builders.

Hence throughout those periods the entity became then that one that led the first establishing of the activity in the varied lands that came to be known as later the Mayan, the Yucatan, the Inca, the Peruvian—and later the Mound Builders in the northern portions of the entity’s present sojourn. At the time of the readings these ideas were considered preposterous to mainstream archaeology. Today that same chronology is accepted. A 2001 book (Mound Builders: Edgar Cayce’s Forgotten Record of Ancient America) that we coauthored with John Van Auken detailed all of Cayce’s readings on ancient America and how well his readings matched what was currently accepted by archaeology and the emerging genetic research. Cayce’s readings about the ancient migrations to the America’s are startling and actually are now supported by modern archaeological research.


…the second generation of Atlanteans who struggled northward from Yucatan, settling in what is now a portion of Kentucky, Indiana, Ohio; being among those of the earlier period known as Mound Builders.


Then the entity was among those who supplied to the peoples the fruits of the soil, learning how to crack corn, wheat and grain, that it might be prepared into foods through cooking—though much in those periods was taken raw.

According to Cayce, the mounds were erected as replicas of the Yucatan, Atlantis, and Gobi experiences. The mounds and earthworks were built by people migrating into the Americas in several waves beginning as long as 50,000 years ago. These waves of people entering the Americas merged with the tribes already present.


For some years we have conducted A.R.E. tours of America’s mounds. While the mounds and earthworks of ancient America are truly worthy of visits on their own merit, the major reason the A.R.E. has sponsored tours of them is because they are mentioned in Cayce’s readings.


The A.R.E. Ohio/West Virginia Mound Builders Tour from July 8-13, 2014 will visit nearly 50 mounds. For the first time be allowed access to mound sites that mimic the layout of the Center City of Atlantis as described by Plato some 2,400 years ago. We will also visit the largest and most extensive set of geometric earthworks in the world in Newark, Ohio.

At Newark there remains a well-maintained set of earthworks that nearly defies description. A near-perfect circular earthwork formed by an outer wall of earth 8-14 feet high encloses 20 acres. Attached to the circle is a massive octagon formed by walls of earth. The octagon encloses 50 acres. At each corner of the octagon stands a truncated earthen pyramid.


It is accepted by mainstream archaeology that its function was to chart the 18.61-year cycle of the moon enabling the builders to predict eclipses. Also in Newark is a massive circular formation formed by a 14-foot high earthen wall with a 7-foot deep moat on the inside. There is one opening into the circle.

One of the key pieces of information that we’ll be presenting on the tour is precisely what these ancient people believed about death. Incredibly, the ideas we’ll present were only recently revealed by mainstream archaeologists. We’ll explore the journey of the soul in detail and visit Great Circle where we’ll conduct a Native American ceremony. Great Circle was a magic machine of earth, which was used as a way of pointing souls in the right direction and propelling them into the sky. Ceremonies will be performed at several sites along the way.


Some of the new mound sites we will visit are places where giant skeletons were reportedly excavated. There are more than 1,000 old newspaper accounts of giant skeletal remains being found at mound sites, most of which come from excavations done by the Smithsonian Institute in the 1800s. Many writers have accused the Smithsonian of being involved in a cover-up and conspiracy. It is a fascinating story and one that has both truth and exaggeration in it. But there actually were numerous skeletons excavated from mounds indicating that the individuals who were buried ranged from 7 feet to nearly 9 feet in height. Where did they come from and why were these tall people so revered as to be buried in the most prominent tombs?


The entity’s sojourns then were with those of a race of unusual height, unusual proportions to what might be termed in the present. For they were then the lords of the land… (1298-1)


What we hope to do on this tour is to truly explain what these mysterious people believed, why they constructed these incredible earthen formations, and what the implications of it might be. Some of the ceremonies we’ll perform will mirror what the Mound builders actually did at the sites. We’ll also explain the truth about the giant skeleton controversy. The facts of this story are actually much more interesting and intriguing than any fictional story generated to explain it. Andrew Collins and Greg Little are completing a well-illustrated book on the topic of America’s mound builders, the giant skeletons, and their beliefs about death. We plan on having it completed by the time of the tour.

Noah the Movie – A Missed Opportunity, part two

Perhaps more than any other Old Testament tale, it is the story of Noah and the Flood with which individuals of all ages and religious backgrounds are most familiar. In Christian, Jewish, and Islamic literature, the story of the Deluge plays an important role. There are actually more than 200 “Great Flood” traditions scattered throughout the world. With this in mind, coupled with the fact that I have been a Noah’s Ark enthusiast for more than 30 years, I have to admit to disappointment in the movie Noah for missing numerous details of this archetypal tale and failing to bring to public awareness the fact that this story has relevance for all humankind.

In the Christian world, the story of Noah has played an important role for 2,000 years. Between the Middle Ages and the 19th century, the fact that fossilized bones of sea creatures could be found on mountain ranges throughout the world was generally believed to be proof that a great flood had occurred. In Christian medieval towns, while biblical mystery-morality plays were making the circuit, the story of Noah and his family was a frequent favorite. Even with the discovery of plate tectonics in the 1800s, and the knowledge that ice sheets had once covered much of the Northern Hemisphere—challenging the medieval belief that “fish bones on mountaintops equals world-wide deluge”—the belief in Noah’s flood was never doubted by those faithful to scripture.


Further confirmation of the existence of the ark even after the 19th century came in the form of eyewitness accounts of the craft upon Mount Ararat in Turkey, near the borders of Armenia and Iran, by many reputable investigators, scholars, military professionals, and theologians. In fact, there have been more recorded sightings of Noah’s Ark since 1840 than during any other period of recorded history! Historical references to the discovery of the ark are traceable at least as far back as the third century BCE.

Over the years, what has fascinated me the most about this story is the fact that it can be explored from various unrelated perspectives—a process that will lead to the discovery that a number of source materials describe complementary aspects of Noah’s tale and expand it. For example, because of the information contained in Genesis 2:5-6, some Christians believe that rain was absent from pre-deluge earth and that the planet received moisture from a water vapor canopy that engulfed it: “…for the Lord God had not caused it to rain upon the earth…But there went up a mist from the earth, and watered the whole face of the ground.” This same premise was also advanced by Austrian-born philosopher, educator and clairvoyant, Rudolf Steiner (1861-1925), the founder of the Anthroposophical Society. In describing the pre-deluge earth, Steiner stated:


…at that time the air was saturated with water mist vapors. Man lived in the water mist, which in certain regions never lifted to the point where the air was completely clear. Sun and moon could not be seen as they are today, but were surrounded by colored coronas. A distribution of rain and sunshine, such as occurs at present, did not exist at that time… (Steiner, “Cosmic Memory”)


Some individuals contend that it was the disappearance of the water vapor canopy and the resulting influx of solar radiation that was responsible for the tremendous decrease in humankind’s longevity—from almost 1,000 years to the present lifespan of 7-10 decades. Scripture further supports this premise in that, immediately after the flood, lifespans begin to decrease with each subsequent generation.


According to the Old Testament, the ark’s incredible dimensions measured 300 cubits long, 50 cubits wide, and 30 cubits high. Historically, a cubit is thought to be the length of a man’s forearm, or somewhere between 18 and 22 inches. It is interesting to note that the ark’s dimensions of 6-to-1 (length-to-width) were considered so seaworthy that Marine architect George W. Dickie purposefully used the same ratio when constructing the U.S.S. Oregon, which was launched in 1898, and was considered the flagship of the American fleet and one of the most stable vessels ever constructed.

The Edgar Cayce readings add more information to the story of the flood. First of all, Noah and his family were not the only individuals saved from the destruction. The eight souls were saved to preserve the consciousness that had been brought into the earth through Adam and the followers of the Law of One, and to continue the spiritual and mental evolution of mankind. However, all over the earth other individuals found safety in crafts of their own making—lending credence to the fact that flood traditions exist worldwide. In fact, the readings suggest that the flood occurred during the second destruction of Atlantis, causing migrations of individuals from Atlantis to other parts of the world.


From the readings standpoint, God did not send the deluge; instead, God intervened to prevent mankind from completely destroying itself. (Interestingly enough, Jewish historian Josephus was also convinced that God did not send the flood and believed that the flood was brought about by humankind.) Apparently, some of the Atlanteans had gotten hold of the energy crystal that supplied power to the continent, misused the energy source, and caused an explosion that tore the continent apart—condensing the water vapor mist that completely surrounded the earth (much like the planet of Venus is surrounded by a cloud canopy).


From a psychological perspective, the Great Flood Myth symbolizes the pattern of being overwhelmed by personal transformation and change and yet somehow becoming a more enlightened individual because of that experience. What is fascinating about the archetypal significance of this tale is that in the last decade of the 20th century, the story of Noah experienced a tremendous rise in popularity. Almost overnight the market seemed flooded with numerous children’s toys, night lights, magnets, collector’s plates, ornaments, clothing, figurines and even several movies about Noah’s Ark. The archetypal reason was not because for some inexplicable reason this man and his family suddenly fascinated society. Instead, because so many individuals now feel in the midst of personal transformation and change this archetype has resurfaced. People feel motivated to put a Noah’s magnet on their fridge because subconsciously it resonates to something they are experiencing deep within themselves.

Jungian psychologist Eleanor Bertine (ca 1944) found much archetypal significance in the flood story and suggested that the flood epic itself was far older than either the biblical or Gilgamesh accounts. Like many researchers, she pointed to a Sumerian version and its Ziusudra Noah that is traceable to at least the third millennium BCE. The biblical and Gilgamesh tales agree with all essential details of the Sumerian version. Bertine was convinced that both the Gilgamesh and the biblical accounts were traceable to the Sumerian version; however, she was also certain that the Sumerian version had been based on something even earlier: “dating back so far that the bottom falls out of time…” (Rohrbach, Pg. 197) Back so far that it corresponds with Cayce’s timing of Atlantis?


In the end, what may be most inspiring for me about the tale is the fact that there is an ancient Armenian legend which states that a gopher-wood craft, enormous in proportions, rests high upon the mountains just waiting until the moment is right for its discovery. According to the tale, God in His omnipotent wisdom, hid the craft, for He knew a time would come in the history of humankind when all the peoples of the world would need the chance to believe.

With his outer mind quietly set aside and his deeper mind at-one with the Universal Consciousness, Edgar Cayce told us, “…know what you will do with this man, Jesus of Nazareth—Jeshua of Jerusalem, Joshua in Shiloh, Joseph in the court of Pharaoh, Melchizedek, as he blessed Abraham, Enoch as he warned the people, Adam as he listened to Eve.” (3054-4) In a reading for a person who had both Jewish and Christian training and was wrestling to decide which religion he preferred, the Source of Cayce’s readings asked: “Have you not found that the essence, the truth, the real truth is ONE? Mercy and justice; peace and harmony. For without Moses and his leader Joshua (that was bodily Jesus) there is no Christ. Christ is not a man. Jesus was the man; Christ the messenger; Christ in all ages, Jesus in one, Joshua in another, Melchizedek in another; these be those that led Judaism! These be they that came as that child of promise, as to the children of promise; and the promise is in you, that you lead as He has given you: ‘Feed my sheep.’” (991-1)


Obviously, when in contact with the Universal Consciousness, Cayce’s perspective on Jesus Christ is much different from that of the church and even of his own outer self. Cayce and his family were Bible-reading Christians. Yet, when he set aside his outer self and lifted his deeper mind into the Oneness with what the readings called the “Universal Consciousness,” a new perspective on Jesus Christ came through him to us, a perspective that is greater than one incarnation and beyond three-dimensional limitations.


From this perspective Christ is the Word, the Logos, the universal light of God manifested through an incarnate person. Cayce’s readings explain that the light of Christ first incarnated in Poseidia in Atlantis around 106,000 BC, doing so to help souls who had lost their conscious connection with God and had become trapped in matter. The attuned Cayce sees us as spirits and minds; physical bodies came long after our original creation in the image and likeness of the Universal Creator. The Christ spirit realized that it was going to take a series of incarnations in order to fully overcome the influences that had taken possession of our minds and hearts, and it came out of the heavens into matter to help us along the way.


The Christ spirit did not incarnate only in the Western world. Cayce explains that wherever the concept of one God and one brotherhood/ sisterhood was proclaimed, the Christ spirit was there. As the disciple John wrote in the opening lines of his gospel: “In the beginning was the Word [the Christ], and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. All things were created through this One; and nothing that has been made was made without this One. In this One was life, and the life was the light of humanity. The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it. The Word [the Christ] became flesh and dwelt among us, full of grace and truth.” A portion of the trinity of God came among humanity to help us. Cayce says this first happened in the legendary times of Atlantis; then again in Eden, between the Tigris and Euphrates; and again in Egypt, and again and again, continuing even today. In one of Cayce’s most often-published readings, he stated: “For the time never was when there was not a Christ...” (262-103)

Many devoted Christians wrestle with the edict that a person must “name the name” in order to achieve full resurrection, redemption, and eternal life. Even the Cayce readings quote this phrase, but with a significant twist to it: “He that would name the name must have become perfect in himself!” (254-3) How many of us Christians can say we have achieved this requirement? Another reading says: “Magnify that name—that name—that becomes on every tongue that of the crucified one in the manner that self is crucified to the fleshly desires…preferring the spirit of the Holy One before self, and considering the neighbor as yourself.” (137-118) Using this reading’s definition of the name, couldn’t a person who has heard little of Jesus be “naming the name” if he or she has crucified fleshly desires, preferring God’s will over his own, and loving his fellow man as himself? Is the name a word or is it spirit? Is salvation the name “Jesus” or is it loving God and others as Jesus instructed? Is Christ only Christian or universal? Is God and the manifestation of God among us limited to select souls? Does not God love and seek the companionship of all His/Her children?


“As an entity, a soul, a mind, enters [the spiritual dimensions] put about the self the cloak, the garment, yea the mantle of Christ; not as a man, not as an individual but the CHRIST—that universal consciousness of love that we see manifested in those who have forgotten self but—as Jesus—give themselves that others may know the truth.” (1376-1) Here we see Cayce equating Christ with “the universal consciousness of love.” This consciousness may be achieved by anyone of any religion or even no religion.


Consider the apparitions in Medjugorje, Bosnia, in 1981. A woman holding a baby was seen surrounded by exquisite rays of light. The young people (mostly teenagers) who saw her said that she looked like the sun, had 12 stars over her head, a luminescent white veil, and a pearl-gray dress. She introduced herself as “the mother of all people.” She encouraged one of the Christian children to follow the example of a good Moslem woman in her community. She said that her message was for all people, and “If it is necessary, I will appear in each home.” The luminescent lady warned her listeners that it is time for complete reconciliation among people. This message was given in Bosnia, where Christians, Moslems, Croats, and Serbs had much underlying hatred and prejudice toward one another.

We Christians need to allow Jesus Christ to be bigger than Christianity. As Jesus said (or the Christ spirit with whom Jesus made himself one), “Other sheep I have, which are not of this fold; them also I must bring, and they shall hear my voice; and they shall become one flock, one shepherd,” John 10:16. Jesus said that he taught and did what he was guided to do from God, the Father, within him. And before leaving us to become completely one with God, Jesus informed us that the “Comforter,” the “Spirit of Truth,” would come to us and guide us.


Of course, not only Christians have to let go of religious elitism. Jews, Moslems, and others have contingents that believe their faith is the only true faith, and all must swear allegiance to their doctrines. As difficult as it may be, Christians, Jews, Moslems, Buddhists, Hindus, and other religious groups are going to have to allow God to be the God of all people, and open their own hearts to all people. As the psalmist observed, God is everywhere and creator of everyone: “Whither shall I go from thy Spirit? Or whither shall I flee from thy presence? If I ascend up into heaven, thou art there. If I make my bed in hell, behold, thou art there. If I take the wings of the morning, and dwell in the uttermost parts of the sea; even there thy hand leads me, and thy right hand holds me,” Psalm 139:7-10. Cayce often quoted the passage: “Hear, O Israel, the Lord our God is one Lord,” Deut. 6:4; Mark 12:29.


Having presented this universal Christ, it’s important to acknowledge that in daily personal spirituality, one uses the practices, concepts, and ceremonies of one’s own religion and culture. In homes in Cairo, Tel Aviv, New Delhi, and New York, families flourish best when using their own religious customs. These evoke the spirit and love of God in particular ways that are ingrained into the nature of one’s being. These become sacred. Universalism is not a call to deny one’s unique ways. It is a call to cleanse our hearts and minds of prejudice against others in the name of God. This evil spirit of prejudice overtakes even the most well-intended, causing moral people to commit immoral acts, justified in the name of religious or ethnic purity. And this spirit does not just occur in war. It occurs in daily life, in little ways. All religious people have felt this from others. Jews, Moslems, and even Christians have felt the sting of prejudice against them. Many secularists in society today have an anti-any-religion attitude, and they base their prejudice on the negative actions of religious people throughout the ages. A new spirituality needs to be born. One that is universal. One that allows God to be God of all people. One that has faith that God can and will save all the souls that can be saved, no matter what their religious or nonreligious perspective.

Edgar Cayce How to Develop Psychic AbilityWhen people think of the Edgar Cayce information, many think first of the more than 9,000 health readings that Cayce gave. Or the readings that focused on controversial Earth-change predictions. Others are most fascinated by the readings on ancient cultures. But there is one main theme that runs through the readings. It comes through in the health readings, the readings on Earth changes, and the information on Egypt, Atlantis, and other ancient cultures. And it’s as important for us today as it was at the time the readings were given.


One of the advantages of working for Atlantic University is that I can attend the weekly lunchtime meetings of the Egypt Study Group in the A.R.E. Visitor Center. Ann Clapp, who compiled the Edgar Cayce Library Series volumes on Egypt, founded the group at the urging of Elizabeth Waitekus, now co-facilitator with Ann. This group has waxed and waned during the past 16 years but its current mode is of exuberant growth. The focus of our study is the era approximately 10,500 B.C., when, according to the Cayce readings, Ra Ta, or Ra (an early incarnation of Edgar Cayce) was High Priest in Egypt. Also incarnated in Egypt at the time were numerous members of what we have come to call Cayce’s “soul group.”


This era, the readings tell us, was “one of the most momentous occasions or periods in the world’s history” (Edgar Cayce reading 900-275). Great efforts were made to develop human beings physically, mentally, emotionally, and spiritually to fulfill our highest potential. This effort was pursued in the ancient temples: the Temple of Sacrifice, the Temple Beautiful, and the Great Pyramid. The tenets put in place in Egypt at that time were those later taught by the Master—who studied in Egypt, among other places, during his time of preparation.


Despite the archetypal enormity of their activities and the challenges they met, people of that time in Egypt seem to have been much like people of our time in so many ways—having many of the same appetites, temptations, failings, and struggles.

One theme emerges time and again in these readings, though expressed in many different words. In the Egypt Group, we keep a small bell on hand and jingle it each time this refrain is repeated in the text.


From life reading 97-2: “In the one before this we find in the land now known as Egypt. The entity then among that peoples who gave the first study of the laws as pertaining to the relationship of man to man, and man to the creative energies…”


From life reading 2652-2: “...with the acceptance of that taught by those that set up the study of the relations of man to man, and man to God, and God to man. The entity gained in the application of same…”


From life reading 355-1: “the entity...aided in bringing much to a peoples... for the maintaining of those influences where…there might be given greater expression to the manifestations of the relationships between man and man, and between the Creative Influences…”


Ra Ta and his colleagues sent emissaries to other nations to share these teachings to correlate them with the spiritual understandings of other people.

From reading 1159-1: “...The entity made for an assistance in those activities when there were the correlations of those teachings from the peoples of the land now called the Indian, or the land of Saneid, the land of On, the people from the Mongolian land, as they gathered in those experiences for their correlation of the best in each that...might be applied...as they sought to make for greater and greater manifestations of their dealings with their fellow man and their activities that brought them in closer relation-ship and understanding with the Creative Forces.”

The theme was stated clearly in a reading Edgar Cayce gave for himself: “Let’s don’t forget the thesis, or the key for which all of this understanding had come: That there might be a closer relationship of man to the Creator and of man to man.” (294-149)



In 1928, reading 254-42 was given for the Board of the Association of National Investigators—a precursor of the A.R.E—which indicated that this should remain the prime directive for the Work:


“...This, then, should be first and foremost: The determined purpose...to have whole hearted cooperation, in a one-minded purpose, and that purpose to make manifest the love of God and man; man's relation to man; man's relation to God. In THIS there must come, as has ever been given, success in such terms as the service is meted…” In 1929, reading 2087-1, given for the development of Atlantic University (and specifically for its first president, William Mosely Brown) stated: “This shall be kept first and foremost in the heart and minds of each and every individual. Not as a tenet to blind the eyes of any. Not merely as a catch-phrase…but rather as a living motto in the hearts, in the lives… of each and every individual, whether this be the truckman, the gardener, the instructor, the pupil, or he that would head such an endeavor - but let it ever be ‘That We May Make Manifest OUR Love, MY Love, ALL Love, for God and Man’.”

Today, written over the doorway of the A.R.E. Visitors Center are the words, “That we may make manifest the love of God and man.”

Still, we might need to remind ourselves that our organization exists—now as in ancient Egypt—to foster a closer relationship between man and God, God and man, and man and man. Let us remember this and claim the promise given in reading 2673-1: “... may it be said of self—‘Even the stars in their courses will fight for the entity’ in aiding others to understand their relationships with the Creative Forces and their fellow man!”

Noah the Movie – A Missed Opportunity, part one

Having been an Ark enthusiast for more than 30 years, I had some measure of anticipation when I first heard about the recent Noah movie: Would the movie capture some of the archetypal significance that resulted in Flood Stories for nearly every culture and civilization on the planet? Would it bring together the tales from various scholarly traditions? Would it explain unexplained portions of the Genesis account? Would it follow some of the same threads of information that had so inspired me? And so on. Unfortunately, I have to say that five minutes into the movie any anticipation I had went right out the window, as the film I watched had absolutely no bearing on the Noah I have come to know.

As background information, I was first inspired by the Noah story while reading the Genesis account and realizing two things that had never been pointed out to me: Methuselah was Noah’s grandfather, and the scriptural timing for each individual’s respective lifespan suggested that Methuselah had died during the Flood. My passion for the story was further enhanced while reading an Edgar Cayce life reading (those readings dealing with reincarnation) that was given to a 28-year-old woman in 1944, when Cayce stated: “What an unusual record—and one of those who might be termed as physically the mothers of the world! For the entity was one of those in the ark.” (3653-1)


Eventually I was led to Violet Cummings’ book that dealt with her husband’s search for the Ark: Noah’s Ark: Fact or Fable? And I came to understand that since 1840 alone there have been more than 20 recorded sightings of Noah’s craft by approximately 200 people. My enthusiasm for the story grew, and I scoured dozens of resources. I eventually wrote my master’s thesis on the topic of “The Ark Myth: Biblical, Rabbinical, and Transpersonal,” (1988), and in time my novel, The Rest of the Noah Story (2010), pulling together all that I had discovered through many decades of research and study. Unfortunately for today’s movie goers, the producers didn’t even get the Genesis account correct.


The movie contains giant rock creatures (similar to the Ents, large tree creatures in Lord of the Rings or the rock monster in Galaxy Quest—I am not making this up)! From the movie’s perspective, only Shem has a wife aboard, which contradicts the Genesis account: “In the selfsame day entered Noah, and Shem, and Ham, and Japheth, the sons of Noah, and Noah’s wife, and the three wives of his sons with them, into the ark.” (Genesis 7:13) Causing quite a bit of frustration for at least one of Noah’s other sons. There is also an evil stowaway onboard, Tubal-cain, who in the Bible is Noah’s cousin and a maker of iron and brass (Genesis 4:22). The movie also has Noah convinced that his mission is to help God put an end to humankind, at one point coming to the brink of almost killing his granddaughters so that no further wombs will be available to birth humankind.


There is a wealth of rabbinical wisdom and inspiration that the movie also overlooks or never knew of to begin with. Rather than having a vision of Enoch (a biblical forefather that never died but was “taken up” by God [Genesis 5:24]), Noah has a crazed dream. Rather than drawing upon some of the rabbinical thought as to why Ham deserted his family and became a wanderer and the eventual father of slaves, the movie version portrayed him as mad at his dad for allowing his girlfriend to die in a mob stampede. The list goes on and on.

Perhaps more than any other Biblical tale, the story of Noah, his family, the Ark, and the Flood are known by individuals all over the world. A conservative estimate is that more than 1.5 billion of the earth’s inhabitants are familiar with the tale! However, the story of Noah is not the only known Flood Tradition. In fact, the “Epic of Gilgamesh” from Babylonian tablets dates back to the 7th Century B.C. and is also widely known.


This story, in essential detail, can be recited by countless individuals around the world. What is not so well known is the fact that Genesis contains not one account of the flood story but two! Modern religious scholarship has isolated at least three major sources for the Book of Genesis: the “J source,” the “P source,” and the “E source,” standing for Jehovah, the Priestly document, and Elohim, respectively. It is the J source and the P source which each have their own account of the Flood.


Originally, the different sources of Genesis were discovered because of the way in which the sources referred to God. The J source uses only the name “Yahweh” (Lord) when referring to God; the P source uses the names “Elohim” (God) and “El Shaddai” (God Almighty), and the E source uses both “Yahweh and “Elohim.” When the Bible was being compiled (no, it did not fall from the sky in one piece), it was the job of a “redactor” to compile all major sources together into one story, but in several instances it is easy to see items in the Noah story that were overlooked by the redactor. Examples: 1) each account has a different number of animals that Noah was instructed to take into the Ark, and 2) each account has a different length of time for the Flood itself.

Total number of animals = One pair of each creature (Genesis 6:19).

 

 

 

 

 

 

Total length of Flood: The water lasted 150 days and remained on the earth for a total of one year and 11 days.

J Source

 

Total number of animals: Seven pairs of birds and “clean” animals, and one pair of unclean (Genesis 7:2). Essentially a “clean animal” is one which chews a cud and has a divided hoof (Leviticus 7:1-11); a clean animal never eats other animals.

 

Total length of Flood: The rain lasted 40 days and 40 nights and the water evaporated after three seven-day intervals of Noah releasing the dove out of the Ark to see if it was safe. Total = 61 days.



Regardless of whether or not we believe the Flood story, it is an archetype, because it is a part of the human experience all over the world. More than 200 “Flood Stories” are scattered throughout the various cultures and continents on the planet. The story has meaning across time and traditions and, as an archetype, is a symbol that deeply touches some aspect of human experience. What this means is that over and above any possible literal truth, the Ark can be seen as a symbolic representation of transformation and change, because the ship’s occupants underwent a journey over which they had no control and yet somehow ended up at a higher level of awareness because of their catastrophic experience. In most of these accounts, legend describes how a family survives a deluge of enormous proportions. Prior to the disaster, the family generally pulls together everything that is part of their world (such as the animals in the story of Noah described in Genesis) and finds refuge in a craft or a ship in which they can ride out the storm. Oftentimes, the family has no control over their journey for the ship is inundated from above and below and they are forced to simply ride out the storm. At the end of the flood, the craft generally finds higher and stable ground and the occupants can disembark and begin their lives anew. Everything that was a part of their old world is now a part of their new (e.g., the animals get off the Ark as well). The difference is that now all of the ship’s occupants find themselves upon higher ground.


Because so much of the today’s world finds itself in the midst of transformation and change, this archetype has resurfaced. However, take my advice—skip the movie and read the Genesis account.

The Language of the Cayce Readings

Some find it hard to understand the readings in the format in which they were given— what some call a King James-style of language. In 1945, Gina Cerminara, author of the best-selling book Many Mansions, wrote an article about the language of the readings for an A.R.E. Bulletin. We thought it would be helpful to revisit her insights. Here is an excerpt of her article.


Anyone who has ever had a reading from Edgar Cayce knows that the language in which it was couched was very often hard to understand… Why was the language so odd? …To this question we cannot give a complete authentic answer, because we are not in possession of all the facts in the case. But we can draw some reasonable deductions from what the readings themselves have offered as explanation, and we can make an intelligent appraisal of all the facts as we know them, in connection with the phenomenon of language in general…


Now it seems fairly clear that—whichever source he used to obtain his information, he was speaking from a point of view infinitely vaster and more intricate than the point of view of earth-plane man, and it is perhaps for this reason that a language difficulty arises… Exactly what the language mechanism was has never been explained by the readings themselves, except for very fragmentary remarks to the effect that higher-dimensional realities cannot easily be expressed in three-dimensional terms. This sounds reasonable…


It must be remembered that the readings were given from a point of view of an enlarged consciousness—that is to say, the source of information was conversant with many dimensions, and needed to condense what he knew into 3-dimensional terms. This is a difficult thing for us to grasp, because we are all so completely imbedded in a 3- dimensional consciousness that we cannot conceive of realities of 4, 5, 6, 7, and more dimensions. Yet both mathematicians and physicists, occultists and clairvoyants, assure us that higher dimensions do exist; and the readings themselves…often make reference to the fact.


By way of learning to appreciate the difficulty involved in compressing knowledge into narrower terms than those really adequate to describe it, one might try a little experiment. One might attempt to make a description of something, say the American flag, without using any words that contain the letter “r,” on the assumption that you were talking to a person whose…language contained no letter “r.”


It seems a simple enough sort of assignment. Yet the moment you began to refer to the most basic features of the thing you would realize that you could use neither the words stars nor stripes. Your first task would be to find other ways of expressing those ideas. Not even bars…perhaps bands would be the closest available equivalent. For stars you might begin to say, “five-pointed figures,” and in the midst of it realize that figures would be incomprehensible to an “r”-less people; so you would settle on five-pointed symbols of heavenly bodies.

Red would be your next preoccupation. You could neither say darker nor deeper shade of pink, but finally you would approximate the idea by saying deep pink… You cannot say there are thirteen bands which alternate in color, nor can you remark that there are forty-eight stars which represent forty-eight states of the United States of America. Even country would be unavailable to you.


Devising circumlocutions for all these…non-existent words—you might finally emerge with a description something like this:


“The flag of the United States of the Continent of the West (that is, the land found by Columbus) consists of eight and five bands of white and a tint that might be called deep pink, passion pink, wine pink, that is to say, the tint of blood—a band of white and then a band of this tint. In the top left of the flag is a field of blue on which we see twenty and twenty-eight five-pointed symbols of heavenly bodies, each to stand as symbol of the twenty and twenty-eight states that make up the land.”


This—as anyone who has ever read a Cayce reading will admit—sounds extraordinarily like a reading—and its clumsiness very likely arises from the same basic cause.


The readings, of course, need no apology. Their merit has been proven so many thousands of times in so many extraordinary cases that the genuineness of their clairvoyance can simply not be questioned. But it has seemed worthwhile to write this article in the interest of bringing out into the open a matter which, to some people at least, looms large as an obstacle to the full acceptance of the readings…

Feel the Power of Affirmations

Of all the wonderful guidance to come through Edgar Cayce’s attunement to the Universal Consciousness, using an affirmation is unique. Affirmations can help us change our mind, mood, and health, and reach new levels of awareness and happiness. He gave over a hundred affirmations to people seeking physical, mental, or spiritual help.


Affirmations


From his perspective, an affirmation is an ideal structured in a potently suggestive statement. He instructed us to speak (aloud or silently) the affirmation, being sure to maintain a consciousness of the meaning of the words, and to speak it with a positive, expectant attitude, until the whole of our mental being was affected positively by the meaning. He suggested that the affirmation be repeated three to five times, but the goal was to achieve a “full, positive response” from the mental portion of our being. Try this. It works.


I have selected three of Cayce’s affirmations, which are at the end of this article. The first one was intended to take hold of desires, needs, and attitudes that we all experience in life and move them to a higher, more universally attuned condition, resulting in greater harmony and happiness in our lives. After sharing this affirmation, Cayce sharply instructed the person to “leave it with Him” rather than to keep wondering and doubting in anxious waiting for immediate results. He wanted people to feel the power of the affirmation in their mental self and then let it go free. The reason for this, he explained, was that the “unseen forces” are more powerful than the seen and work in a special way. The unseen forces work best when we have faith in them, a demonstrated faith shown by allowing them to work their magical way through our bodies, minds, hearts, and lives. He said that the spirit of patience, expectancy, and contentment are fertile soil from which the unseen forces can bring forth their miracles.


The second affirmation was designed to help a person find the best way to be a channel of blessings to others. Cayce explained that the phrase “my going in and my coming out” (taken from Exodus 28:35) is speaking about going in to the Holy Place within us, where God meets with us, and coming out from the Holy Place to relationships with others and our outer work. The going in is mostly done during sleep, prayer, meditation, and moments of reflection and stillness.

The third affirmation was designed to connect us with what Cayce called “the Christ Consciousness,” a state of mind and perspective that best channels the power of light and love into and through us — an excellent state to experience.

When Edgar Cayce documented the Indian migrations from the Yucatan to the North American Southeast, he was engaging a subject that would become one of the most controversial in American archaeology. Though hypotheses of the Yucatan-American Southeast connection have circulated some 200 years, it was not until the late twentieth and early twenty-first centuries that these relationships have been systematically explored and the hypotheses tested. Yet, as recently as 2003, some archaeologists considered the very discussion taboo! i  


Language, like genetics, is an artifact of prehistoric cultures. With careful analysis of the data, linguists are able to deduce the origins and movements of peoples across space and time. The results are as relevant and incontrovertible as genetic data.


Joseph Greenberg assigned the Gulf languages of the American Southeast to the Penutian family of languages based his hypothesis that Yuki, a California language isolate, shares an affinity with the California Penutian languages and the Gulf languages of the American Southeast. ii In 1987, linguistics established the Penutian family to include California Penutian, Mexican Penutian, Yuki-Gulf Penutian, New Mexico Penutian (Zuni), as well as four other groups. Though not uncontested, this classification effectively confirmed the Yuki-Gulf relationship, thereby providing the crucial link required to affirm Greenberg’s rationale.iii

These data are very relevant to our study of the readings, two of which are crucial:

 

The entity was among those of the second generation of Atlanteans who struggled northward from Yucatan, settling in what is now a portion of Kentucky, Indiana, Ohio; being among those of the earlier period known as Mound Builders. (3528-1)


…the entity was…among those called the Cliff Dwellers, being of those peoples who came up from Yucatan to the Northeast and to portions of Arizona and New Mexico… (5729-1)


These two readings recall Greenberg’s hypothesis about the linguistic relationship between the peoples of the Yucatan, the American Southeast, the American Southwest, and California. Likewise it echoes an observation about the Yuki that Robert Melton wrote to Morris Swadesh:

Ethnological evidence [indicates] that the Yuki do not “belong” in California, and have had seemingly direct contact with the Pueblo and SW, most likely in passage from near New Orleans.iv  


Cherokee mythology also remembers their migration from the Yucatan to the American Southeast.v And the Cherokee blood group and antigen traits cluster most closely with the Eastern Maya and Nahua.vi


Several readings document that some migrated directly from the Yucatan to the American Southwest:

The entity was among those who came to what is now the Yucatan land, later journeying with many of those peoples to the south and west – or in portions of Arizona… (2576-1)


The entity came to the South and West from what is now the Yucatan… (1204-3)

In this regard, then, the presence of the Zuni, one of the congeners of the Penutian family of languages, confirms a relationship between the American Southwest and the Yucatan.vii


Thus, linguistic data reveal the relationship between the Yucatan and the American Southeast; the readings, Cherokee mythology and blood data attest to migrations from the Yucatan to the Eastern United States; and the readings and linguistics reveal a connection to the American desert Southwest.


Morris Swadesh postulated that a minimum of 96 centuries was required for the lexicostatistic diversity among what he called Macro-Mayan, which he stated includes Sapir’s Penutian.viii From the readings we learn that the egress to the Yucatan began about 12,550 YBP.


From time as counted in the present we would turn back to 10,600 years before the Prince of Peace came into the land of promise, and find a civilization being disturbed by corruption from within to such measures that the elements join in bringing devastation to a stiffnecked and adulterous people… (5750-1)

Given the limitations of Swadesh’ lexicostatistic measures to estimate the depth of time required to produced the diversity now found among these languages, future research might well reveal a time depth closer to that suggested by the readings.


Now that Mexican and American anthropologists are daring to explore the question of a direct relationship between the Yucatan and the American Southeast, they have found compelling discoveries. These include well-documented monumental and ideological elements as well as a plethora of material artifacts, all testifying to that relationship. We are only just now discovering its scope.

In the fall of 2013, around Thanksgiving time, the A.R.E. Board of Trustees and members of the A.R.E. staff began working with some of the concepts of “prosperity” that can be found in the Edgar Cayce readings. The group chose to watch their experiences for the month of December to see if Cayce’s suggestions relating to economic healing would have a measurable impact (both in their personal lives and for A.R.E. as a whole). The group used a daily affirmation as a reminder to keep their thoughts on the principles of prosperity.

This project was based on previous economic healing and prosperity projects that have come from the readings. Some of the exercises and disciplines undertaken by various groups and individuals have included the following:

  • Daily prayer and meditation, not only to facilitate personal attunement and getting in touch with one’s spiritual core, but to also assist in overcoming any fear of lack.
  • Ongoing work with personal relationships—at home, school, and work—wherever they may be. Rather than seeing people as personal challenges that have to be put up with, the Cayce readings encourage us instead to approach all of our relationships with the ideal of “What am I supposed to be learning from this person?” or “What is this person trying to teach me about myself?”
  •   Being a good steward of the resources that have been entrusted to you. This includes paying bills promptly, not overspending or overindulging, giving yourself the freedom to buy what you need (although not necessarily everything you want), and tithing of both money and time without thought of receiving something in return.
  • Finally, it is also a good idea to keep an ongoing chart of your progress. This chart can include your daily prayer and meditation time, the success of paying off your debts, the notation of any surprise economic assistance that has come your way, personal tithing, positive experiences with improving your relationships, and so forth.

Cayce’s premise is that any economic challenge faced by an individual is inextricably connected to a personal lesson or an opportunity to apply spiritual or universal laws in everyday life. Rather than seeing financial hardships as some sort of punishment or mistakenly assuming that the experience of poverty can somehow make someone more “spiritual,” the Cayce readings suggest that, when seen correctly, the process of achieving economic healing can embody a worthwhile experience in personal growth.

Results on the most current project include the following:

  • On the very day the prosperity project began, A.R.E. got a contract on a piece of property it owns in another state and has been trying to sell for five years!
  • General contributions to the organization for the month of December 2013 were 39% higher than for the month of December the year before.
  • One group member discovered that an outstanding debt that she had been paying on for years would actually be paid off eight months earlier than she had thought.
  • Another group member got an unexpected check for $750—the very amount needed to pay a couple of unexpected repairs.

Because of the overwhelming positive experiences with the project – most notably the ability to maintain an awareness of our ongoing connection to spirit—the supply source of all that exists, the board has decided to continue their experiment and is inviting anyone interested to participate as well. If you would like to participate, in addition to some of the practices listed above, you may wish to focus on an affirmation like the following for a few minutes each day:

In the name of the Christ Spirit (or the Divine Spirit), I am thankful for all that I have been provided. I choose to be a good steward of all the abundance that flows to and through me. I also affirm and appreciate all the abundance that flows to the A.R.E., enabling the organization to help people change their lives for the better in many different ways. Amen.

Dealing with Difficult Astrological Influences

For the past several years, some alarmists have warned of potential widespread cataclysms that await us as we live through the long-running dance of the “Pluto in Capricorn-Uranus in Aries” square from 2010-15. Recently, this aspect last touched exact during the holidays; and in April, several other planets will make exact aspects to this same square. As a result, there is energy for a reshuffling in economic and social conditions. However, there is a flipside to the energy contained within this square that is frequently overlooked: it offers the added benefit of momentum for inner change and direction. If there ever is a period when you want to make lasting change in your life, then now is the time to harness this energy to your benefit.


Astrology Predictions


One of the greatest insights that the Cayce readings offer to astrology is that at its core astrology’s prime purpose is meant as a guide or road map for our individual potential soul growth rather than as a mere method of prediction. Therefore, we are not meant to be helpless spectators in a world that is subject to the fixed effects of the planetary motions within our solar system. We specifically incarnate Earth for the purpose of enacting our will and direction within this dimension. The readings remind us that,


“Astrological urges are not existent because of the position of the Sun, Moon, or any planet at the time of birth, but rather because the soul-entity is a part of the Universal Consciousness and has dwelt in those environs. Thus they yield, or wield, an influence upon individual application of spiritual or mental truths or laws, as they are brought into material manifestations.” (Edgar Cayce reading 2132-1)

The readings go on to state that through free will, we have the ability to harness these energies: “Yet no influence of any nature—astrologically, hereditary or environmental—surpasses the will of the entity, the birthright of each and every soul.” (Reading 2505-1)

Looking at astrology from this viewpoint, it is clear that every person has the ability to use the planetary energies to direct change and movement of activity within their respective lives. Specifically, as we look at the Pluto in Capricorn/Uranus in Aries square, it generally represents a tension in striking the balance between holding onto the status quo (Capricorn) while there is revolutionary change (Aries), and we are witnessing this tension on a grand scale as we project it into our political and popular cultures. The tension of the Pluto-Uranus square then seems overwhelming. Yet, remember that all soul growth and understanding is internal, and it is as Cayce frequently stated that “mind is the builder.” Through meditation and prayer and our attitudes and emotions we can set our intentions.


The energies of this square bring changes and sometimes upheavals into our lives. However, we are amply shown by the world around us that change is a constant: observe nature as the flora and fauna adjust and thrive through the ever-changing tides and seasons. So, we too, need to learn to observe the energy that is activated in the current season, and then make appropriate actions that improve our situation.

Probably the greatest benefit of this square is that it plainly shows us where in our lives we outgrew a situation, and there is then a need to set our sights on a better foundation. When we experience long-running tension, it is a sign that we are afraid to welcome this new energy space. It is akin to wearing old clothes that no longer fit you. It may be your favorite shirt, but if it is too small or threadbare, what is the shirt’s true worth to you? It is the same thing with our beliefs. Sometimes we get so used to a belief or thinking pattern that we forget to step back and see if that belief is still useful to us. Circumstances, at times, then force us to focus on what needs to be changed so we are better able to meet our highest good.


If you find yourself in a circumstance that is stressful or at an impasse, remember to use your inner tools at hand: meditation, prayer, and dream analysis. By going within and listening, you connect with a deep wisdom that gives you the means of transformation from that situation and into creating the movement and momentum necessary for you to meet your right place.


At the very least always bless where you are and the people in your life, since criticizing or condemning your situation only ties you to it negatively and stagnates your movement. When you bless, you not only free yourself from the tension generated from an internal impasse, but indirectly you also lessen the perceived negative impact of the Pluto-Uranus square in our politics and culture by no longer projecting your restricted energy into the mix. Instead you now come from a point of peace, a centered and directed agent who uses the energies generated from the Pluto-Uranus square for positive change.

Although there are hundreds of diets and countless books written about them, when it comes to good health, the Edgar Cayce readings talk a lot about alkalinity and your pH. So what exactly is pH, and how does it affect your health? pH is the measure of the acidity or alkalinity of a solution as it relates to the concentration of hydrogen ions or, in this case, the tissues and fluids of a person’s body. The pH scale range is from 0-14. Neutral solutions, such as pure water, have a pH of about seven. Solutions lower than 7 are considered acidic: greater than 7 are alkaline.

The body functions optimally at an alkaline pH of approximately 7.35–7.45; any deviation just above or below this range can result in illness. Acid-base balance is maintained in the body by a number of intricate systems, of which the three primary ones are the blood, the respiratory system, and the kidneys. Illness or disease is a result of too much acid waste products in the tissues of the body. In fact, just as Edgar Cayce noted, an abnormal bacteria, fungus, or virus in the body can only survive in an acid environment. Unfortunately, acid waste that is not eliminated in a timely manner is reabsorbed from the colon into the liver and placed back into the general circulation.


It is thought that creating a more alkaline environment in the body can help prevent cancer. How then, does diet play a role in acid-base balance and cancer? All ingested substances, whether food, drink, medications, or supplements, and all circumstances, whether mental, physical, or emotional, that affect the body leave behind either an acid or alkaline (basic) ash residue in the body. Researchers have found that cold germs and flu viruses and other diseases, such as cancer, need an acid environment in order to grow and thrive. The goal, therefore, for health is to maintain a pH that is just slightly on the alkaline side. This is done by what many researchers refer to as the 80/20 rule in which 80 percent of the foods eaten are alkaline reacting, and 20 percent are acid reacting. This is the same recommendation given in the readings. In general, most fruits, vegetables, and herbs are alkaline-reacting while protein foods, starches, sugary foods (i.e., candy, cake), most dairy, and prescription drugs are acid-reacting.


Ironically, the Food Guide Pyramid recommended by the USDA, if followed as designed, actually promotes an acidic pH. The pyramid recommends two to three servings per day from the milk/dairy group, two to three servings from the meat group, three to five servings from the vegetable group, two to four servings from the fruit group, six to eleven servings from the bread/starch group, and to use fats, oils, and sweets sparingly. Thus, 65–67 percent of the pyramid is from foods that are acid-forming and 33–35 percent from alkaline-reacting foods. There has been much controversy surrounding the Food Guide Pyramid, with many opponents arguing that it should promote a healthier, plant-based diet. In addition, proponents argue that it was biased from the start, because it was developed by a group of people with strong ties to the dairy and beef industries whose goal was to promote their own products. In fact, in 2000, the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine (PCRM) won a nine-month legal battle against the USDA for this very reason.

In the long run, the best diet to follow is one that promotes an alkaline pH using the 80/20 rule. The diet that best epitomizes this rule is the Edgar Cayce diet. This diet has been around for more than 60 years, and several books have been written about it (visit ARECatalog.com). Of course, it can be a challenge to practice this lifestyle, and even those of us who are educated on the effects of food and pH stray off course from time to time; however, just being aware of the effect of what you eat is half the battle.

(Q) Will the New Year unfold greater opportunities for my professional advancement and my greater service to my fellow man?
(A) These are part of self’s own development and must rise within by taking advantage of those opportunities which are offered from day to day. As has so oft been indicated, and this body will find same within its own experience, it is as we use that in hand that the greater opportunities are given. (Edgar Cayce Reading 1472-9)

With the passing of each year, all of us are faced with the time-honored tradition of New Year’s resolutions. Resolutions date back to Babylonian times, through Ancient Rome, on the coattails of Christianity, all the way to Puritan New England. There is something about the passing of time that calls humankind to change for the better.


Resolutions Common resolutions include, but are not limited to read more, lose weight, save money, be kinder, avoid stress, and meditate. Whatever the idea behind the desire to change, many of us do not follow through with our resolutions. By Valentine’s Day, the list is buried somewhere in the bottom of a purse or was used as scratch paper for last week’s grocery list.


From personal experience, I have learned that change rarely occurs overnight, and it takes work to change. If change were easy, humankind would not need to set resolutions every year! With a few simple steps and practical tips, I believe anyone can make it through the year with their resolutions intact.

Step 1: Compile a List

Resolutions may be simple or elaborate. Try to keep the list concise. This list is not to be considered as etched in stone, but flexible to change, as a person does, throughout the year.

Step 2: Climb Steps, Not Boulders

There are no rules to resolutions. Many times we over burden ourselves with expectations of change. Is it no wonder, then, that resolutions are hard to keep? Do not try resolutions all at once. There are 12 months to a year in which an individual may work on themselves. The best part is that any resolutions that are not completed this year, may be completed the following year.

Step 3: Allow the Momentum to Build

I recommend designing resolutions to build throughout the year. Include some good habits from the previous year that you desire to maintain this year. Do not set yourself up for failure. If a person desires to finish his/her master’s degree this year, but has yet to complete a bachelor’s degree, then that resolution may not be realistic and should be saved for another time. Use logic and be kind to oneself.

Step 4: Give Thanks

Make resolutions fun and remember to celebrate accomplishments, no matter how small. The universe will recognize the effort regardless of the outcome. Just the desire to better oneself is of significant value.

It is the “try” that is the more often counted as righteousness, and NOT the success or failure. Failure to anyone should be as a stepping-stone and not as a millstone. (Edgar Cayce Reading 931-1)

Personally I am planning to layer my resolutions throughout the year. I currently read and meditate daily, so I will continue to do so in 2014. I have plans to run a half marathon in April, I will need to improve my diet to lose a couple of pounds, and I will need to begin my 12-week training schedule very soon. By mid-April, I am planning to complete almost half of my 2014 resolution list. I have already begun to write more in 2014.


The length of a person’s resolution list does not matter. It will not matter if all or none of the resolutions are achieved. The universe will recognize the desire of the individual that is a change in and of itself.

The unseen forces work best when we have faith in them, a demonstrated faith shown by allowing them to work their magical way through our bodies, minds, hearts, and lives.

Edgar Cayce dreamsAs the New Age movement picked up momentum during the last decades of the 20th century, Edgar Cayce began sounding pretty stodgy to many people. Seek a life of service; root out tendencies toward selfishness in your patterns of thought and behavior; attend to your body’s health with careful nutrition, exercise, and other lifestyle choices; set an ideal that you can live by as you go about your normal life activities; form intentional groups to bolster your resolve and follow through; make a difference in your world; pray; meditate—none of these had quite the wow factor that seemed to fuel popular New Age culture. What about experiences in altered states of consciousness? What about great psychic attainments? What about contact with entities on higher planes? What about the power of stones and crystals? While the Cayce readings address all of these things and more with great depth and considerable sophistication, they were often branded as beginners’ material simply because they do not emphasize the phenomenal aspect of the spiritual path.


If we take the time to look, we will find that the Cayce material is at the cutting edge of some of the most important developments on the contemporary spiritual scene. For, even as the popular explosion of New Age interest in the late 20th century was drawing increasing criticism for its tendency toward somewhat narcissistic and magical thinking, other influences were growing up alongside it. Influences that took the best of the burgeoning spiritual awakening and wedded it to science, philosophy, anthropology, and sociology. Influences that have now come together to form an expansive and promising spirituality for the 21st century that is both “integral” and “evolutionary” in the way it draws upon diverse sources of knowledge and wisdom in order to engage creatively with an evolving cosmos, world, and human psyche—a new New Age that is all grown up in comparison to its late 20th-century counterpart. And it turns out the Cayce work was there all along.


Like integralism, the “evolutionary” approach to spirituality promises to reshape the way we think about our place in this world. To appreciate its impact, it is important to recognize that evolutionary spirituality goes beyond the age-old concept of soul evolution, which casts the earth as the place where we come to learn lessons, grow, and work through our karma. From this perspective, the earth plane is often at best little more than the schoolhouse of the soul and at worst the prison of illusion that we seek to escape at the earliest possible time.


By contrast, from the evolutionary perspective, the opportunity of incarnation has as much to do with the evolution of the cosmos as it does our own development. And most evolutionary thinkers point to human consciousness as the current frontier of evolution as it manifests here on earth. The Divine Source from which we arise has an irrepressible drive to create, and we are on the advancing edge of ongoing creation. Our primary role is that of co-creator and the theater of our creative operation is here, in this three-dimensional world of form.

Snow in Egypt?

For the first time in more than 100 years (more precisely 112 years) people from all nations saw the images of snow falling on Cairo, Egypt and even the Giza plateau. Given its desert climate, any precipitation in Cairo is rare; the city averages less than an inch of rain per year and warm, the average temperature in Cairo in December is nearly 60 degrees Fahrenheit. However, there were images of Cairo blanketed in snow, pictures of camels curled up in the snow, even images of the pyramids with a light dusting of snow. The photo of the pyramids, which was shared by tens of thousands of social-networkers has since been deemed a ‘fake’ but the outlines of the majestic pyramids seeming to glow with a bright white hue caused me to wonder if that was how they looked when they were first built.




While traditional archaeology suggests that the Great Pyramid was built around 2500 B.C. under the Pharaoh Khufu (Cheops) who ruled from 2551-2528 B.C., according to the Cayce readings, the pyramids are much older. The Great Pyramid was constructed between 10,490 and 10,390 B.C. by the efforts of an earlier incarnation of Edgar Cayce as the high priest Ra Ta and the efforts of the native Egyptians and the Atlanteans. For all things old are not primitive, in fact, the readings indicate that this was a spiritually and technologically advanced society that created temples for teaching the ‘Law of One.’ In addition, there were centers of learning called Temple Beautiful much like universities for teaching of vocations, meditation, and universal laws. There was also the Temple of Sacrifice much like a hospital and spa for physical and mental purification and rejuvenation. There were emissaries sent around the world to share the teaching and ideals.


It was the building of the Great Pyramid that unified the people with “what may be truly termed the first national or nation spirit of a peoples…” (Edgar Cayce reading 195-151) “Hence there began the first preparation for what has later become that called The Great Pyramid, that was to be the presentation of that which had been gained by these peoples through the activities of Ra-Ta…” (195-151) The Great Pyramid was built for the preservation of their understanding “not only for those in the present but for the generations that were to come…” (Edgar Cayce reading 294-151)


The Great Pyramid was built by Ra Ta working with Hermes as the construction architect and Ra Ta’s wife, Isris, for counsel and advice. “Then began the laying out of the pyramid and the building of same…” (294-151) It was designed based on “the position of the various stars, that acted in the place about which this particular solar system circles…” (Edgar Cayce reading 294-151) The Great Pyramids was “to be the place of initiation of the initiates that were to act in the capacity of leaders in the various activities…” (294-151)


Reading 5748-6 explains how the pyramid was built:


(Q) How was this particular Great Pyramid of Gizeh built?
(A) By the use of those forces in nature as make for iron to swim. Stone floats in the air in the same manner. This will be discovered in '58.


While the readings did not predict snow in Egypt, they did suggest that one day we may again become unified as one people and that one day the Hall of Records will provide “proof of the information may be found…for physically there are evidences of the activity of mental man in archaeological works, see?” (Edgar Cayce reading 254-47)

and Mindfullness

The mind is the builder. How many times have we heard and read these words from the Edgar Cayce readings? Our minds form our thoughts, and from our thoughts come our actions, or sometimes lack thereof, and from our actions come our results—the life that we create in our work, our play, our abundance, our service, our friends--all that we perceive in the world of form.


“For mind is the builder and that which we think upon may become crimes or miracles. For thoughts are things and as their currents run through the environs of an entity's experience these become barriers or steppingstones, dependent upon the manner in which these are laid as it were…..” (Edgar Cayce Reading 906-3)



Myriad of options


Our thoughts are elements of creation. They are the seeds we sow for today, for this moment that will never again exist. We choose to be open or closed in our thoughts about what the universe presents to us as opportunities for guidance, learning, new experiences, service—a myriad of options that present themselves. When our minds and hearts are open, our experiences in turn generate further uplifting thoughts. This is a wonderful energy to offer to the universe as it will generate more of that same energy. This is the purpose of working with Feng Shui, to uplift our lives through the vibrations of our homes and ourselves and to share this with others.


However, sometimes our thoughts and the seeds we sow generate fear—a fear of lack, a fear of loss, a fear of the unknown, or perhaps useless thinking about the path not taken. Cayce said, “Fear is the root of most of the ills of mankind…” (5459-3) Our thoughts determine how we choose to perceive our world.


Our thought-filled minds are the source of our intentions, and paying attention to our intentions is at the foundation of the Black Sect Tantric Buddhist School of Feng Shui. In Feng Shui, the energy of our homes is seen and analyzed as a reflection of our inner self—our furniture, the color of our walls, our artwork, clutter or orderliness—they all have meaning. As within, so without. We choose those aspects of our lives we desire to enhance and shift and thoughtfully create our intentions and select objects to support those intentions. These might include artwork, mirrors, plants, candles, furniture, crystals, lights, wind chimes, fountains, flutes, and colors. Any object in your home or office to which you ascribe a special meaning can be utilized as one of these helpful reminders.

Color may be used to uplift, energize, or calm the emotional balance in a given room. Cayce said, “…the body mentally – and the body in its nerve reaction – would respond as quickly to color forces as it would to medicinal properties….” (4501-1) I have seen amazing and positive changes in romantic relationships as a result of the intentional use of pink and red.


BaguaModern schools of Feng Shui rely on the Bagua, a life map that is used in conjunction with our homes and offices to help us see literally and metaphysically what is going on in our lives (because our personal space is a reflection of our life). There are specific areas of the Bagua, called Guas, that relate to all aspects of life. In the center of the Bagua is the tai chi symbol representing eternal change and flow—the integration of yin and yang, the complementary balancing and integration of opposites. There is no light without the dark. There is no rigid without the yielding. Using the Bagua to consider our life helps us to consider ourselves as deeply as we choose our inner life, our outer life, our work and purpose, our relationships, and every aspect of our being. This center, the Ming Tang, represents health—spiritual, mental, emotional, and physical health—unity, and balance of all aspects of our life.


Feng Shui principles are a guide to living a life of purposeful work, harmonious relationships within families and business, increased knowledge, abundance, creative fulfillment, service, and a deep connection to the Divine in every aspect our of lives. This connection is at the core of Cayce’s life and teachings.


Cayce also understood the importance of peace and harmony in our homes, saying:

“For, as has been indicated from the innate experience as well as from the longings within, a home—home—with all its deeper, inner meanings, is a portion of the entity's desire; to know, to experience, to have the ‘feel’ of, to have the surroundings of that implied by the word home! Is it any wonder then that in all of thy meditation, Ohm-O-h-m-mmmmm has ever been, is ever a portion of that which raises self to the highest influence and the highest vibrations throughout its whole being that may be experienced by the entity?” (Edgar Cayce Reading 1286-1)
