Your Planetary Soujourns—How Astrology Works
By Raye Mathis
According to the readings, between earthly incarnations, your soul lives, or sojourns, in the “environs” of the planets.
Several theories have been offered over the years for how astrology works. A causal theory proposes that there may be an actual physical influence from the planets (like the Moon-controlled tides) that is too small to be measured at the present time.
Another suggested theory is Carl Jung’s theory of synchronicity stating that things happening at the same given moment are in some way meaningfully connected.
“We are born at a given moment in a given place and like vintage years of wine we have the qualities of the year and of the season in which we are born. Astrology does not lay claim to anything else.” —C.G.Jung
The Cayce readings brought forward a more universal and cosmic view of astrology with the idea of planetary sojourns. According to the readings, between earthly incarnations, your soul lives, or sojourns, in the “environs” of the planets, and the astrological influences you experience during this lifetime result from those between-life periods spent (not in physical form) in the environs of the planets.
"Hence we find astrological aspects and influence in the experience, but rather because of the entity's sojourn in the environ than because of a certain star, constellation or even zodiacal sign being in such and such a position at the time of birth." (1895-1)
In addition, an astrological reading does not give information about past earthly lives.
"Q. What is a horoscope reading?
"A. That in which the planets and their relative forces having to do with the planets that control the actions without respect of will or without respect of the earthly existences through which the body has passed.
"Q. Do horoscope readings include former appearances in the earth plane?
"A. Not at all." (254-21 Emphasis mine)
Many ancient medieval and esoteric philosophies and mystery religions have suggested that there is an astral plane that the soul must cross on its way to entering an earthly life, and then again, after death. Angels and spirits are thought to populate these celestial spheres.
In addition, Paramahansa Yogananda reported the following story in Autobiography of a Yogi (1972). Sri Yukteswar, Yogananda's teacher, passed from the earth on March 9, 1936. He then appeared to Yogananda on June 19, 1936 and told him that, "I am in truth resurrected- not on earth but on an astral planet...there you and your exalted loved ones shall someday come to be with me."
The Cayce readings suggest interesting differences between the influences of past earthly lives and the planetary sojourns.
Planetary Sojourns (between earthly lives) influence your mental development, contribute to your individuality, and are responsible for the influences seen in a horoscope.
Past Earthly Lives influence your emotional development, contribute to your personality, and can only be accessed through life readings, such as the type Edgar Cayce gave. They cannot be seen in a horoscope.
"(the planetary urges)... are but the mental urges that arise and become as the individuality of an entity in expression in the material world; while the appearances in the earth through the various sojourns ...are as but the personality in the entity's experience-and are as the urges from the emotions that have been created." (633-2) (my emphasis)
How do the Cayce readings define personality versus individuality?
"Personality is that ye wish others to think and see. Individuality is that your soul prays, your soul hopes for, desires. They need not necessarily be one, but their purpose must be one." (5246-1)
The readings suggest that if the personality and the individuality are not balanced and integrated, then the horoscope might not fit the person.
"Urges termed astrological would be very far from correct in this particular entity. For, as has been indicated, the personality and the individuality of the entity are quite at variance." (5246-1)
When working with planetary influences that result from your planetary sojourns, the readings always emphasize the need for setting an ideal and using your will to make life choices.
"Then, as to the influences from the astrological aspects or sojourns during the interims, know that these are merely urges. As to what one does with or about an urge is oft dependent upon what an entity holds as its ideal-and then the application of will as respecting same. (1842-1)

Seeking a Reading from a Psychic
From the perspective of the Edgar Cayce readings, each of us is our own best psychic. Whether the information comes from a hunch, an intuition, our dreams, or synchronicity, each of us possesses a wealth of internal guidance that can be drawn upon whenever we need it. In fact, the Cayce material suggests that our true natural state is psychic and that as we progress spiritually in our lives we will have more personal experiences with this psychic dimension of our beings.
Still, there are times in life when we may feel the need to receive external guidance. Just as it is appropriate for individuals to seek out help from a doctor, a counselor, a minister, or a trusted friend, there may be occasions when we feel the need for intuitive information.
Whenever A.R.E. features a professional psychic on one of our seminars, programs, or psychic fairs, it is because the individual has demonstrated some measurable ability. However, individuals on our programs are not being endorsed by the A.R.E. While we have worked with individuals who are sincere, ethical, and interested in being helpful to others, we have yet to find an individual who is 100% accurate – and that includes Edgar Cayce, whose calculated 85% accuracy rate is still considered the highest known in contemporary times. The physical, mental, and emotional condition at the time of the reading of the person getting guidance, as well as that of the psychic, may affect the accuracy of the information and/or the ability to communicate/understand this information clearly and coherently.
To get the most from a psychic reading, whether it is external (from a psychic, a numerologist, an astrologer, a “guide,” etc.) or internal (one’s own dreams, inner guidance, visions, intuition, etc.), it is extremely helpful to do a little preparation first.
- The purpose of the reading: Edgar Cayce’s own readings indicated that the purposes of those requesting a reading, as well as the purposes of the psychic in giving a reading and the purposes of those most directly concerned or surrounding both people, played crucial roles in the clarity and depth of the reading obtained.
- Examine your own ideal, values, and soul purpose: Again, the ideals (motivation) and purposes of those directly concerned and surrounding the psychic and the person requesting the reading have an important impact on the quality of the reading. If there is a confusion of purposes, of ideals or if the request for the reading is prompted by greed, curiosity, or desire for power, the quality, clarity, and wisdom of the reading may be considerably less.
- Formulate the questions you want answered: There are some examples below that may help you with the wording. You will want to ask the best questions to elicit the clearest answers.
- Seek guidance making decisions: Be clear in your own mind that you’re looking for help to make your own decisions rather than unconsciously trying to shift the responsibility to someone wiser and with a better view into the future. Getting others perspectives is most helpful when used for making your own informed decisions.
- Examine your own dreams (visit EdgarCayce.org/dreams for more about working with your dreams).
Following are some sample questions:
- Soul's Purpose: What is my mission for this lifetime? How can I best make use of my abilities in the context of my soul’s mission for this lifetime?
- Your own past lifetimes: Describe those past-life experiences that most directly influence me in my current life. Describe those past lives that relate to my present relationship with (insert name).
- Understanding interpersonal relationships: In order to attain real forgiveness and peace, please give me that information I can now use constructively about past-life experiences with (insert name and birth date). Please give that information which will help me understand the source of my problem (provide example) with (insert name and birth date) and what I can do to experience love and healing in our relationship.
- Transforming a particular attitude or emotion: I’ve always had trouble with (emotion for example: losing my temper); what is the source of this and what can I do about it? Lately I find myself plagued with irrational anxiety and insomnia. How can I understand the causes and what can I do about it?
- The future: My ideal is to be of service to God; with this in mind, can I expect that my present employer, (Company Name)to be the place where I can fulfill that ideal in my work life, or should I be looking for another employer?
How to evaluate psychic information, both internal and external:
- Does it have a “ring of truth” for me? Confirmable facts? A feeling of rightness?
- Does it give me applicable things to try to do? If so, what are the results when I do them? Do benefits result for me and all other people involved?
- Does it call me to begin doing the best I know to be doing in my life?
- Does it empower me to take charge of my own life ― giving me a personal next step ― rather than becoming dependent on the psychic source?
- Does it leave me with a sense of hope about my life?
- Does it “speak my language”? Do I feel as if the psychic information addressed me personally, using words, images, metaphors, and examples to which I can relate?
- Let someone else look at the question and answer. What does a trusted friend have to say about the information?
- Does it answer unasked questions, which lie within me?
- Does it stretch me to new, unconsidered aspects of myself and of my life?
- Does it seem to get better with time? When I look back at it six months or a year later, has my evaluation of the reading become even higher?
Visit Edgar Cayce's A.R.E. on Saturday, July 25 for our next Psychic Fair.
Planetary Cycles for Spring
By Nicholas Theo
Spring is a time to welcome renewed growth and activity. The strengthening sun animates long-dormant life, and it reminds us that, in truth, life is eternal. Cayce viewed astrology as a tool that gave us that continual connection to spirit so that we could achieve our goals that our soul chose to experience. He reminded us about maintaining that larger perspective:
“Also it is true that the earthly or earth’s sojourn is only a portion of the solar realm in which the soul finds self as an experience of a day in the earth’s sojourn.”
~ Edgar Cayce reading 553-1
Here we are reminded to view our activities and goals from the deeper soul’s perspective. Thus, our current life is like one pearl on a necklace strand. The silk thread is the connecting experience of the soul while the pearl is the substance manifested by our reactions to the events of that specific life. If we then look at it from this level, we can choose how we want the pearl that is our current life to appear as it sits alongside our other pearls.
This March we saw the final of seven exact matches in the running square between Uranus and Pluto that we experienced over the last few years. This square will define these last years just as the 1965-68 Uranus-Pluto conjunction was the defining energy for the 1960s—a decade of rapid social change and upheaval; and Saturn’s opposition to Pluto in 1931-33 defined the Depression and the rise of Fascism. On a broad level, the energy from the Uranus-Pluto square brought into sharper relief the gulf between political and social belief systems. The greater noise and acrimony that volleyed through the media and politics forced us to find our own truth from within. However, more importantly, and on a personal level, many individuals experienced life-altering changes through external and frequently unexpected circumstances that brought trauma through the loss of home, health, relationship, or status.
Now that the greatest intensity of this energy is past, we live our lives in a new energy space. On a mundane level, these last few years were difficult, so we were forced to find a new peace and balance from within. Therefore, although the most challenging parts are behind us, this new space requires some time for us to get used to it. Yet, we must move forward. Absence of doubt is a rare companion on the journey to follow your own inner direction. In one fairly long reading about astrology and sunspots, Cayce used the final part of the reading to express some eloquent spiritual thoughts. At the end of the reading he said, “Let not your hearts be troubled; ye believe in God. Then just act like it—to others.” (5757-1) Cayce reminded us that even when we have inner questions and doubts, in order to remain in the universal flow of life, we must move forward.
Cayce repeatedly stated the value of astrology. The cycles of the planets within our solar system reflect the many patterns we experience in life. In the last few years, one of those planetary cycles challenged us to step away from a pattern we no longer needed, and move into a new sense of self-awareness. Cayce explained: “The more ye become aware of thy relationships to the universe and those influences that control same, the greater the ability to help, to aid—the greater thy ability to rely upon the God-force within; but still greater thy responsibility to thy fellow men. For, as ye do it unto the least, ye do it unto thy Maker—even as to the Sun which reflects those turmoils that arise with thee; even as the earthquake, even as wars and hates, even as the influences in thy life day by day.” (5757-1)
Therefore, just as the spring energy renews nature, you can use its energy to renew ties and reach out to other people. The personal events that fell under the Pluto-Uranus square may have upended your life, or the life of a friend, family member, or a neighbor. In fact, you or they may still be in a muddle, and that is okay. However, the important thing to do now is to bridge links of support and encouragement as Cayce put it, “… ye believe in God. Then just act like it—to others.” Acting in the spirit of personal kindness and support is the antidote for these times, and if each one of us sows these seeds about us, this sustaining energy will take root, and then bring more balance to our world.

Nicholas Theo, an operations and strategic manager, was raised with the Cayce materials and his interest in astrology started as a teenager. Because the Cayce readings on astrology consistently emphasize the importance of using astrology as a tool for self-discovery and understanding rather than as a primarily predictive system, over the years, his interest in astrology evolved into a side vocation with research on the application of soul astrology (Soulastrologer.com). He has been doing astrology readings since 1980. He is a regular contributor to A.R.E.’s blog at EdgarCayce.org/blog.
