The Divine Name and Other Sacred Sounds
By Jonathan and Andi Goldman
Mantras are "words of power." They are sounds for personal and planetary healing. The
word "mantra" is Sanskrit and may be translated as the "thoughts that liberate from
samsara (the world of illusions)." Mantras are listened to or recited for many different
purposes; as a means of achieving different states of consciousness; to create resonance
with specific attributes of divine energy; and to manifest different qualities, from
resonating the chakras to embodying compassion. Mantras are found in all the different
sacred traditions including Judaism and Christianity—the "Hail Mary" or "Amen" in the
Christian tradition, or the "Shema" [pronounced sh’mah] or "Shalom" in the Hebrew
tradition are the equivalent of mantras, as is any repetition of prayer, chant, or sacred
sound. The prayers, chants, and sacred sounds of the Native American tradition or the
Islamic tradition may also be considered mantras. In fact, there is virtually no spiritual
tradition, including those of indigenous peoples, in which the recitation of sacred sound
as mantra does not occur.
While there are many mantras that are quite long and complex, people are often looking
for short mantras that may be easily sounded together in a group. Please note that it does
not seem to matter in what pitch, frequency, or keynote the mantra is chanted with regard
to the effect of the sound.
Of all the sacred sounds on this planet, the one that is most often chanted is the OM.
Undoubtedly, at any given moment, there is someone, somewhere, chanting this sacred
mantra. The OM is considered one of the oldest vocal sounds in existence—many
speculate that it has been chanted for untold thousands of years. It is considered to be the
"first of all mantras," the original, primordial sound—the mantra of creation.
OM is a mantra from the Hindu tradition, a Sanskrit word said to be the sound from
which the universe and all of creation first manifested. While pronounced OM, certain
Sanskrit scholars state that it is written as AUM. Many consider the two words to be
interchangeable. OM is said to be the sound that contains all sounds—it is the totality of
all other sounds. Swami Sivananda Radha says, "The cosmic sound AUM, or its
condensed form, OM, is the origin of all other sound. OM is everything. It is the name of
OM is a multi-dimensional sound and as such may be understood a number of different
ways. One understanding is that OM (or AUM) represents attributes of the major trinity
of Hindu gods: Brahma, Vishnu, and Shiva. Another understanding is that the A
represents the physical plane, the U the mental and astral planes and the M, all that is
beyond the reach of the intellect. AUM or OM is the initial syllable that begins almost all
mantras. Thus OM represents the Infinite, the One Mind, the all-embracing
Consciousness—that which is the very essence of existence.
THE DIVINE NAME
The Divine Name is a newly rediscovered sound that is universal in its origin and said to
be encoded within our DNA. This is not simply a word, but a vocalized sound that can
shift the vibratory rate of all who experience it. In addition, many sources believe that the
Divine Name was the most sacred of sounds found in the Old Testament—the
foundational book of the Abrahamic traditions, which is responsible for over half the
planet’s religions. The Divine Name was said to be so powerful that it became prohibited
from the Old Testament and then became lost for over 2,500 years. The Divine Name is
composed of a harmonically related series of vowel sounds that resonates all the chakras.
This sacred sound begins at the crown chakra at the top of the head, goes down to the
root chakra at the base of the spine, and then returns to the crown chakra.
The power of this sound is extraordinary. The Divine Name is composed of vowel sounds
with specific resonances that can be experienced by anyone, regardless of their spiritual
path, religion, or belief system. Because of the universality of this sound, knowledge of
this sacred sound has now been found in many different traditions throughout the world,
from Native American to ancient Egyptian.
The Divine Name puts the person chanting it into deep meditation with higher levels of
consciousness. Along with the powerful spiritual effects of this self-created sound, the
Divine Name can be used to create extraordinary health benefits for us on a personal
level, balancing our chakras and our electro-magnetic field. Through learning to create
this sound we’ll activate our innate God force; generating major positive changes and
transformational healing for ourselves and the world.
Contained within the Divine Name are the sounds of three mantras OM/AUM, AH, and
HU. Many perceive the Divine Name as not only a universal sound, but that it is also the
personal name of God.

The Giving Tree
By Heather Preston
Leaning on the deck rail of my little Sausalito house one spring day, straining to see through the upper leaves of a large tree obscuring the hill beyond, I wished idly that if only the top two feet of the tree were gone, my view could be restored. Within the next few days, leaves began dropping from the top of the tree, but only from the top two feet. A few days later the last leaf dropped from that area of the tree.
I could once again see the hill across the valley.
It became apparent, a couple of weeks later that no more leaves were going to follow, that the remaining lower leaves were intact, healthy, and secured. Then it dawned on me that something utterly remarkable had happened. I caught my breath in confusion and amazement. Was this possible? There, indeed, was the view I had wished for. It was as if the tree had “understood” and granted my wish. A thrilling idea.
I was grateful. But as time passed, I became uneasy, for even though I couldn’t have expected what happened, the tree had granted my wish at its own expense. I read once that a tree’s topmost leaves are unique in that they protect it in some way, processing the sun’s energy differently from its other leaves.
After telling a few friends this story and showing them the empty top branches, some were silent and some squinty-eyed. Cold observation proved the tree to be bare on top. “Right, it’s bare on top,” they would say and point out possible reasons, “Not enough water?”
Pretty soon the novelty turned into concern for the tree’s well-being.
I wanted those leaves back more than I wanted the view. I went out and pleaded with the tree to grow the leaves back and said that I was really sorry to have caused it any harm.
Slowly, to my great relief, buds started reappearing on the empty branches, tiny ones at first, only a scattering of green here and there. Then more and more popped open and stretched into leaves. Within a short time, the treetop was filled with beautiful new green leaves. I was weak with gratitude. Friends now marveled to see the perfectly normal tree. The rationalizers still rationalized. But I knew what I knew.
One of my friends, Francis Rath, who prior to becoming a bookstore owner had been a rather imposing law enforcement officer, found that in the course of his work, he could put his hands on people in trauma, and they would instantly stop convulsing and breathe normally. He was a true healer and a sensitive. About a year after the leaf-dropping incident, Francis was at my house for a party. He stepped outside for a breather and leaned against this tree. He later told me that he felt it to be remarkable; its emanations were compassionate and giving. He asked me if I knew that this was “one special tree.” So I told him the story that I have just told you.
“Compassion is no attribute.
It is the Law of Laws…a shoreless universal essence,
the light of everlasting right and fitness of all things,
the love of love eternal.”

The Beauty of the Body—the Temple of God
By June Avis Bro
I have always trusted my body to pretty much heal itself , to warn me when I’m out of balance and could become ill, to get me where I’m going, and to gather the energy I need for specific tasks. I think that my trust of my body came from an incarnation in Egypt where Mr. Cayce said I taught the care of the body in the Temple Beautiful and probably witnessed the priest Ra-Ta rejuvenate his body after years of exile.
The body is intricately designed and extremely inventive whenever it responds to illness or trauma. I remember some research my husband, Harmon, reported on some 30 years ago. Someone had a serious injury to the eye and doctors explained how nearby tissue had moved in to help do the work of the injured and missing tissue and healed it.
At the 2014 A.R.E. Member Congress (an annual conference held at A.R.E.’s Virginia Beach headquarters), Sidney Kirkpatrick brought to the stage a man who had tuberculosis (TB) in his youth and spent years in sanitariums. Back in the 1920s and ‘30s, people with TB were treated as lepers, because the disease is very contagious and there was no cure. They went to the sanitariums to die. This patient, George, had heard of Edgar Cayce, gotten a reading, and started to use the same charred oak keg that was prescribed for Gertrude Cayce (when she had TB). He didn’t tell anyone about this, not even his family.
Later, an x-ray had shown George’s lungs were healed of TB and that his right lung had grown larger to handle the work of the left lung, which had become useless. Somehow, Sidney found George and arranged for him to come to the A.R.E. Congress to tell his story of healing.
Many Christians have for centuries been afraid of the body and its instincts and some even view the body as evil. Some religions teach that bodies, especially female bodies, have to be fully covered.
Edgar Cayce’s view of the body shocked people living in the ‘20s, ‘30s, and ‘40s. He said over and over again that the body is God’s gift to us, and we should treat it with the utmost respect—as the “temple of God,” which Jesus had said over 2,000 years ago.
This we should take seriously, because if we view the body as God’s temple, we will treat it differently. We will watch what we put into our bodies, we will watch what comes out of our mouths, and we will lead as balanced a life as possible—making a place for work, for laughter, and play; for music and the arts; for nature; and for reaching out to others in selfless service.
Nearly every temple, church, or mosque has a place for music and artworks. Edgar was an artist, an award-winning photographer. Although not trained in music, he had much to say about the positive influence music can have on people. As he was preparing to cross over, he heard heavenly music: the music of the spheres. The rapture on his face must have been beautiful to see. It was a final blessing on his life of dedicated service to God.
The holy emblem displayed at the center of a church, temple or mosque, signifies the focus, the ideal, the deep prayer and longing of the soul for connection with the Holy One. The body helps us make this connection with its endocrine gland centers.
Every church, temple, or mosque has pads for us to kneel on. As I get down on my knees, I offer my mind, body, and spirit to God. Edgar’s term for God was often “the Creative Forces.” I love this name for God, because it suggests God’s creativity is in me too. I actually join my creativity with God’s creativity, and together we produce something wonderful.
So we are body, mind, and spirit. One is not less than the other. All three aspects of us must work together to bring us closer to God.
When my granddaughter Katie was four, she took her first plane ride. I asked her how she enjoyed her flight. She said, “Oh, Gramma, the plane went up and up and up and pretty soon I was right next to God!” That’s what the physical, glandular parts of our bodies can do for us if we learn to train the body to be still and cooperative, the mind to be quiet and focused, and the spirit to be free and guided by the Holy One.
Spirit that uses matter, (the body as temple), that uses every influence in the earth’s environ for the glory of the Creative Forces, partakes of and is a part of the universal consciousness. (3508-1)

April 2015 Update
From the Desk of Kevin J. Todeschi
This is my update for April 2015 to A.R.E. members and friends who are interested in the new and exciting trends occurring within Edgar Cayce’s A.R.E. and Atlantic University. A number of exciting things are happening this month! Please share the following with your friends:
This year, 2015, is the “Capstone Year” of our $30 million CREATE Campaign (capital, endowment, and program support)… and, thanks to some recent donations for our renovation project and upgraded technology (focused on world outreach), we have raised almost $27.5 million – just $2.5 million to go! $1 million of that is needed to renovate our Library and Conference Center (new restrooms, HVAC system, Library carpeting, expanding the auditorium, parking improvements, and upgrades throughout the building). Donors of $500 or more to the project will be listed on our Stairway to Heaven.
A.R.E. Camp is also raising funds to build a new shower house; our Prison Outreach program is expanding into prison libraries; and you are still supporting our various programs and our day-to-day operations through your Annual Fund donations as well. Thank you!
Golden Circle donors and Edgar Cayce Legacy Society members: Mark your calendars! Join us for our annual Donor Appreciation event the evening of Friday, June 26 at Virginia’s Museum of Contemporary Art (MOCA). Details and invitations will be forthcoming.
Twice a year the university honors students by holding a Convocation where they can present their final project to faculty, administration, alumni, fellow students, and the public at-large. This presentation is not a thesis defense, but an exhibition of their hard work and unique findings. In being a distance education program, many students have never been to the Virginia Beach campus, so this is their first face-to-face interaction with their peers, mentors, and the A.R.E. Please join us in supporting these deserving students at the bi-annual Atlantic University Convocation, April 24, 9:00am-4:15pm, with reception to follow.

When we act in cooperation with "the Force"—using our whole being to integrate and cooperate with "what is trying to happen" already—then every aspect of our lives is transformed. In the act of cooperating with the Universe, we can aid our own self-actualization as well as the continuing evolution of life and culture on this planet. We become whole as we make others and the culture more whole. We can then embrace our life’s mission and the part we play in the universe.
