EURO CONGRESS 2003 IN HAMBURG

Announcement by Renate Werner and Rick Pinard

Nestled in the undulating hills and woodlands just south of Hamburg, Germany, lies the conference complex Sunderhof – the venue chosen for the Edgar Cayce Euro Congress 2003. The name “Sunderhof” itself comes from an ancient word that refers to precisely this type of rolling terrain of tight hills and valleys, which was pushed up in northern Germany by the last Ice Age. The Web site for the Sunderhof is http://www.dersunderhof.de.

Appropriate meeting places in the basic vicinity of Hamburg – Germany’s second largest city and one of the world’s largest ports – fill up far in advance. The job of finding a venue fell to our dear Cayce friend in Hamburg, Margot Sontag, who had also attended the Euro Congress near Prague in 2001. To say that Margot did a good job would be an understatement, especially as the availability of venues was tight. When she inquired about the availability at the Sunderhof – more than a year before the actual date of Euro Congress 2003 – they informed her that there was only one weekend left in the entire summer / autumn of 2003: September 12-14, and we had to move fast to reserve that time. Therefore, regrettably, we were not able to discuss the exact timing with other Cayce leaders, as we would have wished.

The Sunderhof, however seemed to be an ideal location. It is a large hotel and conference center with multiple meeting rooms of varying sizes. Around 150 people can easily sleep, eat, learn and play there at a time. It is situated in a forest and, therefore, very peaceful, quiet – and yet the nearest train station on the commuter rail into Hamburg (population circa 2 million) is only a mile or so away (travel time to the city 20 to 40 minutes depending on destination). The Sunderhof features a meditation room, a reading room with a fireplace, meeting rooms for religious services and several small café/pub like spaces. It is surrounded by a large campus with a garden and by the forest. The air is very clear and overall the place has a feeling of good health to it.

And good health was what we were hoping to support with this Euro Congress. The motto, which was also developed through discussion with leaders in Europe and around the world was: “Healing Body and Soul.” So, the main thrust of most lectures at the Congress dealt with the many approaches to healing our clay houses, and the spirits inside them, as provided in the Cayce readings.

The speakers at Euro Congress 2003 were (alphabetically): Dr. Kurt Bergter, Ralf Emrich, Patricia James, Meyer Louzoun, Gunnar Olsson, Dr. John O.A. Pagano, Anne Pedersen, John Pedersen, Barbara Piel, Dr. Peter Schoeb, Margot Sontag, and Jeanette Thomas.

This Congress also allowed plenty of time for meeting with Cayce friends and for walks in the woods. The schedule was not as packed with lectures as Euro Congress 2001 – so everyone had time to rest, relax and enjoy.

The Congress itself started in the afternoon of Friday, September 12, and ran through the afternoon of Sunday, September 14.

Two other events were offered prior to the Congress: a three-day health care seminar featuring Dr. Peter Schoeb, and a Cayce remedies workshop given by Jeanette Thomas.

Euro Congress 2003:General account of the Congress

Having attended this Euro Congress was a unique experience. The program went quite smoothly, in perfect harmony and peace. It was characterized by a very high vibration which energized everyone.

Just like the other Euro Congresses, this Congress was filled with greetings, laughter, joy and love. It was an opportunity for people to get together, meeting old friends again and making new friends. The atmosphere was one of friendship, togetherness and oneness. More than ever, it appeared that the A.R.E. is a large international family, and that all have a deep desire to help and support one another.

The organizers did a fantastic job at coordinating every detail. Planning and coordinating such an international event always requires much time and energy. However, the organizers were rewarded in their efforts by the happiness and enlightenment that all the conferees experienced.

The place and setting were ideal. Surrounded by a magnificent forest, the participants felt immersed in nature. The conference hall was in a separate building nestled under majestic pine trees.

All the talks were interesting, informative, well presented and relevant to the main theme. The schedule was full, but well balanced. It left time for enjoying one another’s company, and communing with the beautiful rural setting. Everyone left the Congress energized and uplifted.

Except for three, the lectures were given in English, with simultaneous translation into Czech, French and German. The translators did a great job at keeping up, all day long, with enthusiastic speakers.

Dr. John Pagano made three outstanding presentations. In the last one, the conferees got to practice, accompanied by soothing music that Dr. Pagano himself had composed, a series of exercises that stretched every muscle and joint of the body. These exercises will soon be available on video.

Through his lectures and his bestselling book “Healing Psoriasis: The Natural Alternative,” now translated into five languages, Dr. Pagano has helped countless people all over the world. Dr. Pagano’s contact information is as follows:

Fax: (201) 947-8066

On Saturday afternoon, Margot Sontag gave a very nice talk on study groups. In the evening, a workshop was held in which the audience divided into various groups (usually by language) and experienced group dynamics.

Gunnar Olsson, A.R.E. Representative in Northern Sweden, videotaped most of the presentations. Copies of tapes are available from Gunnar by individual request. His e-mail address is
ci-12758@mailbox.calypso.net

Prior to the Congress, Dr. Peter Schoeb gave a three-day health care seminar, and Jeanette Thomas gave a one-day Cayce remedies workshop.

Dr. Peter Schoeb is a chiropractor, massage therapist and instructor who trained with Dr. Harold Reilly from 1983 to 1985. He has been studying the Cayce readings for over 20 years. Dr. Schoeb currently spends most of his time in Virginia Beach, teaching at the Cayce-Reilly School of Massotherapy and working at the A.R.E. Health and Rejuvenation Center. He is a popular speaker among the Cayce centers in Europe. His e-mail address is peter.schoeb@edgarcayce.org

During the whole event, there were cooperation, concern for others and harmony.

People were very happy to see one another again. For many participants, the highlight of a Euro Congress is the human factor: seeing again friends they have not seen for a long time, making new friends, and experiencing the family atmosphere as well as the family ties that we feel so strongly among A.R.E. people, as members of a soul group that has been together in many lifetimes.

Euro Congress 2003: The Beauties of Northern Germany

Account by Stefanie Piel

When we announced the Euro Congress in Venture Inward magazine and also on the A.R.E. Web site, we did not include information about what to do and see in the area. This was unfortunate. If people had read Stefanie Piel’s account that is reproduced below, they might have decided to attend the Congress and enjoy some sightseeing in the vicinity of Hamburg…

« To all the friends interested in coming to the Euro Congress, in beautiful Northern Germany:

The few days of the Congress might not be enough to tempt you to visit our wonderful country. May we, the German Friends of Edgar Cayce, invite you to see more of it?

Visit Hamburg and its great history as a Hanseatic city, in earlier times borderline to the Danish kingdom. Hamburg was and is gateway to the world. From here, cruise liners, fishing boats and sailing vessels depart on exciting trips into all parts of the world. Much of the old town offers tremendous experiences, with cosy pubs, exquisite restaurants and leisurely strolls along the Alster and Elbe and over the famous Maiden’s Bridge (Jungfernstieg).

You wish to take a look at the countryside? Drive through the Elbtunnel and directly into one of Germany’s most beautiful landscapes – The land between the seas: Schleswig-Holstein. On its west side the North Sea plays its wild games, on the east side the Baltic Sea’s waves calmly surge against the beaches. In between, little villages and lakes are happily situated and fields stretch to the horizon.

Only about 60 miles away from Hamburg you’ll find Bremen, another Hanseatic city, and Bremerhaven, a port worth your discovery. Take a tour through the old town, listen to the fairy tale of the Bremen Town Musicians, go to a concert or stroll along the port of Bremerhaven.

Not yet satisfied? Take a day trip to Helgoland, a tiny German island with red cliffs and white sand, within easy reach of Hamburg and Bremen. Use your time to do duty-free shopping, or enjoy yourself at the beach.

Do you wish to visit a German North Sea Health Resort? Cuxhaven might be the right place for you then. Beautiful dunes with marram grass, endless beaches and the unique German wicker beach chairs. Experience the healing force of mud flats walks. Visit the seawater spa. Or walk through the unspoilt nature Cuxhaven has to offer. In the afternoon or evening, you might like to visit a tearoom and drink real German East Frisian Tea. Taste our unique tea with rich cream, rock candy or rock candy in rum – you’ll just love it!

Northern Germany has much more to offer: take your time, discover it and enjoy a unique holiday! »

Hopefully other events will be organized at the Sunderhof in the future, even another Euro Congress. It is a perfect place for retreats or conferences. And you will then be able to visit some of the attractive places mentioned by Stefanie.

EuroCongress 2003:Personal accounts

Below are several personal accounts. They are listed alphabetically by country.

Rick Pinard (Czech Republic)

I don’t know if it would be appropriate for me to comment on the Congress itself, since I was involved in organizing it to some extent. That wouldn’t be too objective.

I had a great time and really enjoyed myself. I was very impressed with how things worked out. Even though there were fewer people this year, they were wonderful people and the energy was quite high. I felt lifted by it for two weeks after.

Anne Pedersen (Denmark)

From Denmark four people shared the travel expenses and went in the same private car. We were all from the board of the Danish Edgar Cayce Society: the head of board, Anne Pedersen; her husband John, who is our “Cayce CD-ROM master”; the treasurer, Lilly Larsen; and the secretary, Aase Harrekilde-Petersen.

It was a great trip, even though we did some map-researching around the huge city of Hamburg. That was before getting ourselves on the right track, so to speak.

The congress was held at Der Sunderhof which was located just south of Hamburg and situated absolutely beautifully in the midst of a great big wood.

It was once again great to be surrounded by Cayce people from so many countries! Even though we do understand and speak English, a little French and some German, it was fun to listen to the other participants speaking in their mother tongues of French, German and Czech. We even met a medical doctor from Finland who now lives and works in Germany! This is really International Outreach!

Renate Werner and Rick Pinard did a tremendously good job. Not only by finding such an unusual and quiet location for us, but the Congress itself was very well planned. We appreciated the fact that they hadn’t made any “double-booking” with the different topics and speakers. Everybody could listen to each lecture, not having to choose which ones to go to and what to skip. We liked that idea!

Kirsten and Thomas Rühling (Germany)

TWO GREENHORNS AT THEIR FIRST EDGAR CAYCE CONGRESS
One thing before we get going: IT WAS GREAT! And now, back to the beginning...

After a five-hour trip by train from Gross-Gerau to Hamburg, we arrived at the Sunderhof on Thursday by lunchtime.

After lunch we attended Jeanette Thomas’ workshop. As we were both beginners, we had not the faintest idea of what to expect. After only a short while, we were impressed by Jeanette’s kind nature and by the relaxed atmosphere as a whole. The explanations that Jeanette Thomas gave were so comprehensive and, at the same time, captivating that we all literally hung on every word she said. This first workshop was a great start into the congress. Never before had we got to know new and really nice people in so short a time and such a natural manner. Within minutes, exciting discussions developed about applications, about “this” and “that”, what the one or the other had already tried.

The accommodation was like the best times in youth hostels – small but clean. We felt very comfortable at this beautiful place.

>The next days we attended every part of the program, determined as we were to take home as much knowledge as possible from this congress.

It really is a great feeling to meet for the first time in life those people you normally only read about. The easygoing way of Dr. Schoeb, the tremendous personal magnetism of Dr. Pagano, the endearing way of Jeanette Thomas, and not to forget Renate Werner were for us an unforgettable event.

Dr. Pagano’s lectures were particularly impressive. It was fascinating to see in pictures the healing of psoriasis according to Dr. Pagano’s method. They were almost incredible healings. As incredible as Edgar Cayce himself was. Unfortunately, to elaborate on each of the wonderful and interesting lectures would take too long here. The whole program was very well planned. And there was always a marvelous, easygoing atmosphere of mutual understanding.

A tremendous praise for the organizers and all performers of this unforgettable congress! And we hope to see everyone again next time. We will definitely be there!

George Bouloukos (Greece)

Upon returning to Greece from the Euro Congress, I announced to our members that we are committed to host the Euro Congress of the year 2007. They all got very excited and in fact we have started scouting for the most adequate place to host the Congress.

My son Christopher and I enjoyed very much the Euro Congress in Hamburg. It was held in the most ideal place, in a wooded forest and the weather was perfect. We were somewhat delayed in getting there, even though we left a day early. There were no direct flights to Hamburg from Athens, so we had a choice to come through London, Brussels or Budapest. The connection in Budapest was delayed some three or four hours.

For us, in Greece, it is a comfort to know that Edgar Cayce’s philosophy and work are spreading across the European continent.

I think Europe is the most devastated continent of the planet Earth. The people have been fighting each other since ancient recorded times. Their divisions are cultural, linguistic, religious and political.

Perhaps Cayce’s philosophy and universal vision could unite these people under the belief that we are God’s lost and deluded children. Unless this universal consciousness is adopted and worked upon, the divisions, hatred and mistrust will always poison their relations and lives. Cayce can become the common denominator and unifying force, for all diverse people, on all corners and continents of the Earth.

Cayce’s philosophy can bring a new dawn in this turbulent continent and the divisions of ancient hatreds and mistrusts. No American can fully understand the social, political and religious struggles within these small countries, without living among them for a few years. On a tour, for instance, several years ago in Northern Greece, where the population is a mixture of Bulgars, Albanians, Serbs and Moslems, I became fully aware of how difficult and dangerous it is to speak on such subjects as reincarnation. Some, attending the lecture, became so violent that started a brawl, with fist fights. I was ushered out from a back door for safety.

Whoever had the idea for a Euro Congress must be a blessed soul. We expect protests when the Euro Congress is held in Greece in the year 2007, but we expect to exorcise these dark clouds of ignorance.

If we have the support of other Cayceites from the same continent, we trust and believe that we’ll have a great Euro Congress.

Dr. John O.A. Pagano (U.S.A.)

Other than the valuable information presented by the speakers at the 2003 Hamburg Edgar Cayce Euro Congress, I found the organization of the event by Renate Werner and Rick Pinard most impressive. When a special event such as this conference comes off without a snag, people have a tendency to believe it was easy. I tend to differ. The reason it looked easy was because of the hard work, sacrifice and dedication by the organizers behind the scenes.

The set-up of the electronic equipment by field experts who drove a small car from Croatia to Hamburg with all the equipment necessary for an impeccable public address system, as well as glass enclosures for translators in four different languages, is a feat seldom equaled. Such expertise often determines whether the event becomes an outstanding success or a dismal failure. In this case it proved to be a system that speakers dream of.

The beautiful YMCA Center Sunderhorf near Hittfeld, just outside of Hamburg, was the perfect facility to conduct the conference. Nestled in the woods, with spotless rooms, walking trails, excellent cafeteria and speakers hall, it made our entire stay one to reflect upon for years to come. Added to that was the special touch of experiencing the beautiful German countryside.

The speakers program was well balanced. Subjects dealing with the spiritual side of things to the physical, practical applications were well covered. In other words, there was something for everybody.

It was my privilege and honor to meet Dr. Kurt Bergter, a modern-day Albert Schweitzer, who practiced medicine in the deprived areas of India for many years. His wisdom and expertise were obvious when he spoke of the outstanding works of the priest Sebastian Kneipp and his water cure as paralleling many of the suggestions on water therapy by Cayce.

My own contribution consisted of three segments: “The Edgar Cayce approach to Holistic Healing”; “The Natural Healing of Psoriasis and Eczema”; and “The Body Flexible” (a series of 30 maneuvers set to music) designed to extend the range of motion (ROM) of every joint in the body. The entire group participated with great enthusiasm.

I see the Edgar Cayce conferences growing steadily throughout the United States and foreign countries every passing year. The reason is that information, particularly on matters of health, is made available that cannot be found under orthodox procedures. This does not constitute a threat to modern medicine but rather an enhancement, an expansion if you will, all for the aid of suffering humanity. Edgar Cayce was the conduit through which this “Gift” was provided. It’s up to us, collectively or individually to unwrap this present and use it to our benefit, or leave it sealed, unopened and collecting dust thereby being of no value to anyone.

The choice is ours.

We hope that our reports on Euro Congress 2001 and Euro Congress 2003 will inspire people, all over the world, to participate in the upcoming Euro Congresses.
