BACKGROUND OF THE CAYCE HEALTH SYSTEM

Definition and Description

    The Cayce Health System is a comprehensive approach to health and healing.  The system is based on the principles and techniques of healing espoused by Edgar Cayce, widely regarded as the father of modern holistic medicine.  The system consists of:

  • A body of health information based on the psychic readings of Edgar Cayce;
  • Health practitioners certified in the Cayce approach;
  • Lay persons who apply the Cayce health philosophy in their lifestyle;
  • Health organizations which incorporate the Cayce health information in service delivery;
  • Training programs which teach and train the Cayce approach;
  • Researchers dedicated to understanding the Cayce health information;
  • Businesses which manufacture and distribute Cayce health products.
  • History and Development

    The Cayce Health System has its beginnings in the early psychic readings given by Edgar Cayce during the first decade of the twentieth century.  For over forty years Mr. Cayce served as an intuitive diagnostician.  His readings were stenographically recorded and provide the conceptual basis for the Cayce Health System.  With his death in 1945, the Association for Research and Enlightenment (A.R.E.) continued to make the vast collection of over 14,000 psychic readings available to the public.  Private clinics and practitioners, research organizations and the general public continue to investigate and apply the therapeutic principles and techniques recommended by Edgar Cayce.  There Is A River, the primary biography of Edgar Cayce, is one of several key works which document the history and development of the Cayce Health System.

PRINCIPAL CONCEPTS OF THE CAYCE HEALTH SYSTEM

    The Cayce approach to health and healing is based on the following fundamental concepts:

  • Holism - This system affirms that human beings are multidimensional including physical, mental and spiritual aspects which must be considered in relation to health and healing.
  • Inner Healing - All healing comes from within.  Our bodies have the inherent ability to be healthy. Therapeutic interventions work best by assisting the processes of innate healing.
  • Prevention - Healthy lifestyle is emphasized as a means of staying well and preventing     disease.  Because all healing comes from within, the same therapies which assist the body in healing itself are often helpful in the prevention of  illness.
  • Self Care - Self responsibility in making choices and applying what we know to be true on a regular basis is the foundation of health.  Most of the therapies utilized in this approach are best done in the home and as part of the daily routine of life.
  • Natural Therapeutics - "Nature cures" is the basis for many healing systems as it is for this one.  Natural remedies and therapies which work closely with and are supportive of the body's innate healing ability are emphasized in this approach.
  • Integration - The Cayce Health System acknowledges that all therapeutic modalities and systems of healing can be helpful.  The important point is to find the best combination of treatments for each individual.  This cooperative attitude seeks the common ground between systems and is known by various names such as "complementary medicine," "integrative medicine," and "comprehensive medicine."
  • Individuality - Each person is an special entity.  Health and healing can best be achieved by a person-centered approach which recognizes and utilizes the uniqueness of each individual rather than limiting people to diagnostic categories and pathological labels.
  • Health & Illness - Health is a state of wholeness, balance and growth.  Incompleteness and imbalance ("incoordination") are common experiences which can challenge us to grow and develop.  Thus illness can often be viewed as an opportunity for transformation.

RESEARCH

    Regarded by many as the father of modern holistic medicine, Edgar Cayce provided a vast amount of information on the physical, mental, and spiritual dimensions of health and healing.
In cooperation with Meridian Institute, a non profit organization dedicated to researching the Edgar Cayce health information, the Health and Rejuvenation Center (HRC) has conducted basic and applied research in the following areas:

Basic Research

    Current and past projects in basic research include:

  • Radial Appliance Study (Energy Medicine) - exploring the effectiveness of a device to equalize circulation;
  • Nervous System Coordination - assessing neurophysiological parameters with computerized equipment;
  • Manual Therapy Principles & Techniques - studying clinical effectiveness and physiological regulation;
  • Acid/Alkaline Balance - measuring the relationship between diet, lifestyle, health and systemic PH.

Group Pilot Studies

    HRC and Meridian Institute have conducted several small group pilot studies to look at the efficacy of the Cayce approach in combination with the group dynamics of a ten day conference focusing on a specific illness.  Thus far, we have researched this model with regard to psoriasis, migraine, epilepsy, multiple sclerosis, Parkinson's disease, asthma, and chronic fatigue syndrome.  Future group pilot studies will include type II diabetes, arthritis, hypertension, ulcerative colitis, irritable bowel syndrome and Crohn's disease.

Individual Research Projects

    HRC is offering a wide variety of individual research protocols which allow participants to apply the Cayce approach on their own.  Currently, the following protocols are available:

Personal Application Research

    Following the Edgar Cayce philosophy of personal application, HRC collects anecdotal evidence on the use of the therapeutic principles and techniques suggested by Edgar Cayce.

Scholarly Research

    In addition to staying abreast of the mainstream and alternative health literature, HRC is actively engaged in researching important historical works such as early osteopathic textbooks.

Clinical Research

    Clinicians applying the Cayce approach are encouraged to document outcomes.

PRACTITIONER - CLIENT INTERACTIONS

    The Cayce Health System offers flexibility to clinicians who apply this approach.  Four basic models of application are currently being used:

  1. Person-Centered Model - The focus of this approach is the uniqueness of the individual patient rather than a disease category or historical case.  Using a "systems theory" model, the clinician seeks to understand the various aspects of the whole person (physically, mentally and spiritually) in a fashion similar to Edgar Cayce.  This approach somewhat resembles "functional medicine" in assessment and application.  However it is more comprehensive, especially regarding the relationship of structure and function at the biological level (i.e., somatic dysfunction and manual therapy).  The Comprehensive System Analysis procedure is a primary resource for the clinician using the person-centered model.
  2. C.A.R.E. Model - The C.A.R.E. model developed by Harold J. Reilly is a good starting point for understanding basic systemic interactions from the Cayce perspective.   Reilly was a physiotherapist who received many referrals from Edgar Cayce.  Reilly noticed that the complex systems approach of Cayce could be simplified into four basic functions essential for health.  Thus C.A.R.E. stands for:
    • Circulation
    • Assimilation
    • Relaxation
    • Elimination

    The C.A.R.E. approach has a strong self-care/home heath emphasis which utilizes relatively safe and nonspecific modalities such as diet, exercise, massage, etc.  The primary resources for the C.A.R.E. approach are the book The Edgar Cayce Handbook for Health Through Drugless Therapy (by Harold J. Reilly and Ruth Hagy Brod) and classes offered by the Harold Reilly School of Massotherapy (A.R.E.).

  3. Case Study Model - This approach utilizes the collection of readings given by Edgar Cayce.  Basically, the idea is to find a reading which closely matches the condition of the patient.  Researching and matching factors such as symptoms, etiology, diagnoses, age, sex, etc. lead to the best possible match.  The individual treatment plan for that reading is applied as given or adapted for the patient. Traditionally, this approach has relied on Circulating Files and the copies of the readings in the A.R.E. Library at Virginia Beach.  With the transfer of the Cayce readings to electronic format (The Complete Edgar Cayce Readings on CD-ROM), computer search capability has greatly increased the practicality of this approach.
  4. Disease-Centered Model - The focus of this approach is on disease categories as diagnosed by standard medical assessment.  Treatment protocols based on the Cayce information for specific diseases are provided.  Typically, the protocols are intended for the idiopathic form of the disease (also referred to as "essential" or "pure").  For some illnesses with distinct variations, the protocol may provide options to address the variability.  In most instances, adaptation and modification of the protocols for specific circumstances relies on clinical judgment and knowledge of the Cayce approach.  The Cayce Health Database is a primary resource for this approach as it contains all the treatment protocols and extensive documentation of therapeutic rationale, modalities and resources.  Research Bulletins which give statistical data on the causes and treatment of a variety of syndromes may also be helpful, especially when considering treatment options beyond the basic protocols.

    These models are not mutually exclusive.  For example, one common strategy has been to begin with a disease focus (such as a circulating file on a specific illness) and then look for the best case match within the circulating file for that condition.

APPLICATIONS

    The Cayce Health System is comprehensive yet flexible in its varied applications.

  • Self Care/Home Health - The Cayce Health System has a rich heritage of providing information and support to the general public through books, tapes, articles and conferences designed to encourage self healing at home.  Wellness and prevention are emphasized.

 PRIMARY THERAPIES

    The Cayce Health System utilizes a wide variety of therapeutic modalities which tend to fall into one of several basic categories:

  • Manual Therapy is therapeutic use of hands to diagnose and treat illness.  The Cayce system relies heavily on traditional osteopathic applications together with modern chiropractic, physical medicine and massage therapy.
  • Electrotherapy includes several appliances and techniques such as the wet cell battery, radial appliance, violet ray appliance, ultraviolet ray lamp, sinusoidal, x-ray and magnetic therapy.
  • Diet/Nutritional Therapy focuses on acid/alkaline balance and food combining with special diets for blood, body, and nerve building.
  • Hydrotherapy (therapeutic use of water) includes colon therapy (irrigations), fume and steam baths, sitz baths, Epson salt baths, and various packs.
  • Pharmacology relies heavily on natural remedies such as herbal medicine and dietary supplements.
  • Mental Therapy covers a broad range of psychological and psychosocial techniques such as cognitive-behavioral therapy, visualization, hypnosis and milieu therapy.
  • Spiritual Healing includes interventions such as prayer, meditation and laying on of hands.
