HOW TO VOLUNTEER

volunteer

Each person interested in being an A.R.E. volunteer is required to complete an application for service in the Volunteer Program office. We will then meet with you to review your application. The A.R.E. organization does not take responsibility for the safety, welfare or administration of volunteer benefits to individuals who have not completed the requisite paperwork in our Volunteer Program Office.

During your volunteer application interview and discussion, your interests, skills and abilities will be explored to determine which of the A.R.E.'s departments offers the best match of your skills, yet satisfies your interests and personal growth requirements. This is an especially important step, providing the organization with vital emergency contact information necessary to our risk management process, as well as very valuable information for tracking your hours of service. Without first completing this application, you are not an official A.R.E. volunteer and are NOT entitled to volunteer benefits with the organization.

A representative of the Volunteer Program Office may conduct a brief orientation program where you may receive important information regarding A.R.E.'s policies and your volunteer benefits. You may also be given a tour of the buildings and grounds, and introduced to staff and other volunteers.

It is recommended that you see the Edgar Cayce Legacy video shown everyday at 2:00 p.m. in the mini.

During your first couple of months, you are asked to attend “Survey Lectures.” These lectures are held in the Mini auditorium each afternoon at 3:30. Our Visitors Center maintains an up-dated calendar of these lectures for your reference. The monthly calendar is generally printed in the volunteer newsletter each month. You are expected to attend one lecture on each of the following topics: Dreams, Meditation, Reincarnation, Health, ESP or Psychic Phenomena. You keep track of that hour in the Time Log for Volunteers, which is found in every department. Your supervisor will show you where it is kept and how to fill it out.

The time commitment needed from volunteers varies greatly among departments. There are three time-based categories of service.

Regular Volunteers -These volunteers participate on a mutually acceptable weekly schedule arranged through the Volunteer Program and the Department supervisor.

On-Call Volunteers -These volunteers are called as special projects arise throughout the organization.

Flex Volunteers -These volunteers simply call or come in, available wherever there may be a need on that particular day.

Regular, On-Call and Flex Volunteers may be long-term or temporarily assigned. You may work in a particular department for as long as you wish. You may also be placed in several departments as a way to keep your service fresh and enjoyable. We encourage our volunteers to determine the manner of service most suitable to their particular life-style. However, volunteers are not free to solicit volunteer job opportunities from A.R.E. staff, or transfer themselves from one department to another. It is the responsibility of the Volunteer Program manager to know where volunteers are working within the organization.

We require a three-month minimum commitment from our volunteers prior to being placed in our most challenging volunteer positions.

OPPORTUNITES TO SERVE

Volunteer positions are often, but not always, clerical in nature and dependent upon our staff's ability to accommodate you within the scope of their own responsibilities, equipment availability and possible training schedules.

The following list of departments offers opportunities for volunteer service:
Atlantic University, Audio/Visual , Cayce/ Reilly School, Camp & Youth Activities, Congress, Conferences & Activities, Human Resources, Library, Lobby, Member Services, Prayer Services, Prison Program, Shipping, Study Groups, Grounds & Buildings, Health Services, and Secretarial Pool.

Volunteers are members of special teams, like the Glad Helpers, The Temple Dancers, Congress Team, Survey Lecture Program and The Board of Trustees.

New opportunities to serve open up every day. There are many one time events that need help. We list opportunities in the Volunteer Newsletter and on the Volunteer Hotline (ext. 7365). Or call the Volunteer Office at ext. 7368.
