ARE Volunteer Hnadbook
Policy on Internet Use
Handbook Contents

First, it is very important that staff and volunteers strictly avoid access, download, upload or "posting" of any material containing derogatory racial comments, sexual content, derogatory religious or political comments, offensive language, or any material which would negatively reflect upon the ethics, integrity or public image of the A.R.E.

Second, our facilities and resources are not to be used for personal gain, non-ARE business activities or solicitations.

Finally, it is important that our systems not be bogged down by non-A.R.E. use of the systems to connect with such things as on-line radio, music, video, and any other uses of the internet that are drawing upon system resources for extended periods of time. The internet connection that we use has limited capacity, and frequent or continuous use of our connection for non-A.R.E. purposes, reduces the capacity of the system for appropriate organizational activities.

It is very important to realize that attempting to obtain or successfully obtaining unauthorized access, or circumventing computer security measures is very serious misconduct that may result in legal or criminal actions as well as termination of employment or volunteer service within the organization.

It’s important to remember that our computers and network systems are designed to keep track of events. For that reason, almost all of our computer based activities are part of the corporate records and when necessary, can be examined by management. The materials on the company systems are not private. They are legally considered to be company business and company property. Thus anything for which our systems are used should be considered in that light. If you have appropriate use or security questions about specific activities - discuss them with your supervisor - FIRST!

Policy on Volunteers at Field Conferences

A.R.E. Conferences anticipates and hopes to encourage the fact that many of our staff and volunteers will want to attend educational conference programs both in VA and in the Field. Since it is the goal of the organization to nurture all in this regard, we have created the following parameters for staff and volunteers who wish to attend A.R.E. Conferences (note: the policy is separated into various categories):

  1. Staff Attendance at Conference Programs (H.Q. & Field):
Staff is welcome to attend most conferences (including the annual Membership Congress) for free with the exception of some limited registration events. For programs occurring during normal work hours, supervisor permission is necessary in order to attend; the necessity of taking vacation time may also apply (contact Human Resources for additional information.)

  2. Volunteers Working at a Conference in the Field:
    1. All volunteers assigned to work at a Field conference by the Regional Coordinator/local registrar/book table coordinator are permitted to attend for free during the portion of the program for which they have been assigned to work.
    2. Any regular local volunteer (e.g. Core Team member, newsletter editor, etc.) who wants to attend the conference and is not working at the conference may attend at the discretion of the local contact/ Region coordinator.

POLICY ON NON-DISCRIMINATION

Equal employment opportunity for all is an essential philosophy at the A.R.E. and throughout the organization, including Atlantic University, the Edgar Cayce Foundation, the Cayce-Reilly School of Massotherapy, and the Health and Rejuvenation Research Center. We will evaluate all applicants for employment, contractor services, faculty, conferences, and classes without regard to race, color, religion, national origin, ethnic background, gender, age, sexual preference, or non-disqualifying disability or history.

We will take action to ensure that qualified applicants, employees, contractors, volunteers, faculty, clients, students, visitors, and conferees are not subjected to unlawful discrimination. This includes, but is not limited to, our actions in recruitment, employment, assignments, promotions, reassignments, transfers, disciplinary matters, establishing rates of pay or other compensation, and selection for training opportunities. It also applies to our words and actions in the workplace, in meetings, in classes, in conferences, in e-mails and other correspondence, on the telephone, and in all other forms of interaction with others on behalf of A.R.E.

All management and supervisory personnel have a responsibility not only for personal compliance with this policy, but also for monitoring and reinforcing compliance by others.
