Kevin Todeschi's Journey with this Work
Let me share with you a little of my journey through the many A.R.E. departments and programs over the years.
I first became interested in A.R.E. 42 years ago in the summer of 1975. I was in the eleventh grade and living in Colorado when I came across the Jess Stearn book, A Prophet in His Own Country: The Story of the Young Edgar Cayce. I read that book from cover to cover. When I came home, I informed my parents that one day I was going to work at A.R.E.
In 1981, I attended the 50th Anniversary Congress and was truly inspired (and blown away) by the event! So I became a Life Member and became determined to move to Virginia Beach and work for the A.R.E. I had been working as both an accounts receivable clerk at a large country club and assistant to the vice president of investments at a large bank, so when I did move the next year (35 years ago!), I got a job in A.R.E.’s Accounting Department.
Over the next 24 years, I went on to work in or supervise every department. Many members are surprised to learn that we have approximately 40 department areas at A.R.E., so let me just cover a few highlights:
After Accounting, I supervised the organization’s correspondence from Customer Service. Today, that department processes more than 50,000 orders each year and takes over 13,000 phone calls annually. When I was there—long before email—we manually processed over 1,500 letters per month from individuals asking questions like, “What did Edgar Cayce say about ___?” Today, most people get their information from our website (EdgarCayce.org), where we welcome more than 100,000 unique visitors each month!
Conferences came next. In addition to hosting about 20 conferences per year in Virginia Beach, we also host between 50-60 “field conferences” throughout the U.S. During my time in Conferences, I had the wonderful opportunity to work with volunteers throughout the country, many of whom remain close friends to this day. They make all of our programming outside of Virginia Beach possible. Thank you all!
In 1990, I became Membership & Communications Director for the organization and worked with the Cayce/Reilly School of Massage, the A.R.E. Bookstore, Prayer, Education, A.R.E. Camp & Youth Activities, Public Information, and International Tours. There are so many highlights from this time period, let me just name a couple: Our Prison Outreach program has long been the one activity area that receives MORE MAIL than any department, each and every day! Spread entirely by word of mouth, prisoners pass along the fact that inmates can obtain life-transforming books for free from the A.R.E. I loved reading so many of the prisoner testimonials about how the Cayce information had changed their
lives, made them understand their responsibility in co-creating the path they had chosen, and inspired them to make better choices (and help others) from here on out. It is truly an incredible program!
Next, I had the honor of serving as editor of Venture Inward magazine for four years. That magazine remains at the heart of A.R.E.’s membership and is now available online as well as through the mail. It was a wonderful experience reading letters from our dedicated members, interviewing leading-edge speakers, and writing or editing an incredible assortment of articles, all exploring the profound personal change available through the Cayce readings. I have often told individuals that the Cayce information contains the tools for total personal transformation, becoming a Christ in the process—all we need to do is the application!
This year, 2017, marks the 140th birthday of Edgar Cayce. From very humble beginnings on a small farm in Hopkinsville, Kentucky, somehow the work he left behind has truly changed the thought of humankind. We help people change their lives for the better, but our work is only possible with your help! I do hope we can count on your donation this year.
As one of our donors recently told me, “I just think of my donation as giving some of the resources I’ve been stewarding on God’s behalf back to doing God’s work.”
THANK YOU for being a part of an organization that Edgar Cayce said is destined to change the thought of humankind!
Ever the Same,
Kevin J. Todeschi
